Match preview: Fleetwood Town v Stevenage FC

24 November 2023

Fleetwood Town are back in Sky Bet League One action after what feels like an eternity since the Cods ran out 3-0 winners against Exeter City nearly two weeks ago, but here we have all you need to know ahead of the Stevenage match on Saturday.

Fixture: Fleetwood Town v Stevenage

Competition: Sky Bet League One

Date: Saturday 25 November 2023

Kick-off: 15:00 (BST)

Venue: Highbury Stadium, Park Avenue, Fleetwood, FY7 6TX

With a fine run of form of six games unbeaten in all competitions, the Cods' momentum was halted by the international break, as it's been nearly two weeks since a ball was last kicked in a competitive manner, it's a welcome arrival in the form of high-flying Stevenage to Highbury in what is the two sides first ever meeting.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STEVENAGE

With a similar unbeaten run to the Cods, Saturday's visitors are seven unbeaten in all competitions and sit in a very healthy fourth position in the table with nine games won, five drawn and four losses. With every player doing their part, it's hard not to highlight Jamie Reid's impressive start to the campaign as the striker has scored 11 goals in 17 appearances, one less then Charlton's Alfie May who leads the charts with 12.

With an experienced manager in Steve Evans at the helm, the Scotsman is currently on track for his finest win percentage of his managerial career as he is currently averaging 1.9 points per game with a 55% win rate during his reign at the Lamex Stadium - with Stevenage's last result a 1-0 win at home to Lincoln City, Evans reached a personal milestone of 100 games in charge of Stevenage with 55 wins, 21 draws and 24 losses, he and his staff will have similar aims for the next century but the Cods will have other ideas.

An eight hour round trip and a 400 mile round trip for the Boro as they travel up North to the Fylde Coast - as mentioned it will be a first meeting for the two sides - so it's one to tick off for both sets of fans within the 92 teams - a trip that Stevenage will be relishing as they have won more then they have lost on the road.

WHAT LEE JOHNSON HAD TO SAY PRE-MATCH

"Nothing has surprised me with Steve Evans [Stevenage's manager] as he has been a very successful manager at the many Clubs he has worked with over the years - Stevenage have a really strong identity, and they are able to recruit and maximum the players where their attributes that formula has worked - Saturday will be a another big test and a slightly different challenge based on that identity.

"We will need to win first balls, tidy up on the second balls and I know that is easier said than done against a side that are well drilled - we will need the patience from our supporters on Saturday but also they can be excited about our form and individuals’ confidence levels so it will be an interesting game which could be end to end."

THREE THAT HAVE PLAYED FOR BOTH

Mark Roberts: A name fondly remembered for both of Saturday's sides, Roberts was part of Town's leadership team during the promotion season from Sky Bet League Two in 2014 and often worn the armband for the Cods - before he represented Town though, he ran out for Stevenage Borough [name change in 2010 to Stevenage] on loan where he then signed a permanent deal at Stevenage where he played 191 times , wearing the captains armband for the Boro where his natural leadership found him in a caretaker manager spell on two separate occasions.

Steven Schumacher: A straight deal between the two sides saw then central midfielder sign for Boro from Fleetwood. Schumacher was part of Town's promotion from Sky Bet League Two in 2014 where the former Everton academy product played 33 times in that promotion season for Fleetwood but was released the following Summer. Schumacher has a fine current managerial CV now though as his Plymouth side are the Championship new-boys and sit in 19th place.

Max Clark: Clark's footballing journey has taken him from Yorkshire for Hull, Holland for Vitesse to the Fylde Coast with Fleetwood and the respected sides after in Rochdale, Saturday's visitors Stevenage and his current side Gillingham in Sky Bet League Two. Clark played 15 games for Fleetwood between June 2021 and January 2022 where the left-sided defender has seem to found rhythm in his career now at Priestfield since signing last Summer.

Match Reports

Report: Town fall short in their clash against Stevenage

25 November 2023

Fleetwood Town returned to action after the international break to a 3-0 home defeat against Stevenage at Highbury in their latest Sky Bet League One outing.

Despite creating several good opportunities and dominating for large periods, Town were left to rue their missed chances, with an early Jamie Reid strike and counter-attacking goals from Ben Thompson and Elliott List earning Steve Evans’ side all three points.

It didn’t take long for the game’s opening goal to arrive when a swift Stevenage move was finished off by Reid after just eight minutes, as the striker fired in a venomous first-time shot from inside the area.

Despite conceding an early blow, Town responded quickly by carving out a number of good opportunities. The closest came when Danny Mayor’s deflected effort was well saved by Taye Ashby-Hammond from inside the area, after some great work out wide from Shaun Rooney.

The Cods then had two brilliant opportunities to equalise just before the half-hour mark. First, Jack Marriott found a pocket of space in the box before being denied from point-blank range, before Phoenix Patterson’s dangerous low cross just needed someone to apply the finishing touch.

As half-time beckoned, Fleetwood was ultimately left frustrated to be a goal down, after dominating for large periods. The final chance of the half came when Josh Earl’s low cross took a wicked upward deflection and nearly landed in the far corner, but Stevenage maintained their lead heading into the break.

That elusive equalising goal so nearly arrived straight after half-time, when Patterson fooled the Stevenage defence with some brilliant step-overs, before blasting an effort onto the underside of the crossbar - that somehow bounced off the goal-line and away.

At this stage, Lee Johnson’s men were in full control, but they were set to be cruelly punished on the counterattack by Boro, as when Kane Hemmings found B.Thompson in space, the latter calmly lifted the ball past Jay Lynch to make it two-nil.

Even then Fleetwood continued to push, desperate to make their second-half dominance pay off, as substitute Jayden Stockley came close with several headed efforts.

As we entered the final ten minutes, the Cod Army rattled the bar again, this time through Mayor, who unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the area.

It looked like it was set to be one of those unlucky afternoons in front of goal, as Patterson forced Ashby-Hammond to spring into action again with a powerful low drive before Marriott also saw the rebound denied - it just wouldn’t land for Fleetwood.

With five minutes of added time signalled, Lee Johnson’s Cods threw everything forward and the were hit on the counter once again, with substitute List racing away before squeezing the ball past Lynch to secure all three points for Stevenage.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Wiredu, Lawal, Mayor, Broom (Stockley 68’), Marriott, Heneghan (C), Simons (Vela 25’), Rooney (Tshimanga 81’), Earl, Patterson.

Subs not used: McMullan (GK), Johnston, Holgate, Graydon.

Stevenage XI: Ashby-Hammond (GK), James-Wildin, Butler, Piergianni, (C), Forster-Caskey (Freeman 78’), Roberts (N.Thompson 78’), VanCooten, Burns, Reid (List 84’), B.Thompson (L.Thompson 78’), Hemmings (MacDonald 90+2’).

Subs not used: Hegyi (GK), Pressley.
