Match preview: Fleetwood Town v Shrewsbury Town

26 August 2023

Fleetwood Town face Shrewsbury Town on Saturday 26 August at Highbury Stadium in Sky Bet League One, and in this preview we tell you all you need to know about the fixture in FY7.

Fixture: Fleetwood Town v Shrewsbury Town

Competition: Sky Bet League One

Date & kick-off: Saturday 26 August 2023 (3pm)

Venue: Highbury Stadium

General - Highbury Stadium (Mar 23) 1.jpg

FLEETWOOD TOWN

Fleetwood are without a win under their belt this campaign with three losses in a row in the league - the most recent a 1-0 loss away at Derby County a week ago with Martyn Waghorn's goal in the first half being the only difference - however, there is optimism in the Town camp that the first three points of the season aren't too far away with club captain (and an ex-player of this weekend's opposition) Josh Vela recently speaking on how every member of the squad understands results need to improve quickly and what it means to the team to get the first win for the fans.

With no goals scored in three matches, Fleetwood will be looking for fortunes to change in the opposition box - there is no shortage of ammunition in Town's ranks on who can spear-head the attack as in the past few weeks the likes of Promise Omochere, Ryan Gradyon, Jayden Stockley and Jack Marriott have all owned the striker's position but it hasn't quite clicked yet for momentum, something the squad knows something has to change in order to pick-up more positive results.

With aims to make Highbury a difficult place to come for opposition fans, the Cods understand that ruthlessness needs to occur in both boxes and that they can't make it easy for their opposition to get the ball into dangerous areas as easy as they have in the games they have played this season - with the addition of defensive-minded Bosun Lawal from Celtic who will be looking to start infront of the Highbury crowd for the first time, head coach Scott Brown is doing all he can to sure it up at the back.

SHREWSBURY TOWN

Shrewsbury make the journey from Shropshire to Lancashire with the aim to start gaining some momentum as their start to the season has seen a mixed-bag of results with two wins and two losses to their name. With a week to prepare for their fixture against the Cods after a 1-0 loss to Lincoln City at home last time out, Salop's head coach Matt Taylor has told their club website that his players have the capability to bounce back after disappointment at home to The Imps but he knows Fleetwood won't be an easy fixture at Highbury.

Shrewsbury sit in a comfortable 12th place in the Sky Bet League One table with aims of rising up the leaderboard; they know they'll need every player in their squad to play a part, especially with their latest signing of the highly-rated young forward Kieran Phillips from Sky Bet Championship side Huddersfield Town. Phillips, has gained valuable mens' football experience with Walsall, Exeter City and most recently Morecambe, has scored a combined total of 14 goals in his loans, a number Shrewsbury will be hoping to increase in his time at The Croud Meadow stadium this campaign.

With 500 tickets sold so far with that number looking like it may increase, the travelling Salop fans will be hoping for a good afternoon out on the Fylde Coast as they look to pick up their first away win of the season - more fire in the bellies of Shrewsbury's attackers however may be needed to make it an ideal afternoon though, as the side currently sit 23rd in the division for shots on target per match so far this campaign.

LAST TIME THE TWO SIDES MET

It was a resounding 3-0 win for The Cods the last time these two sides faced each other, with goals from Admiral Muskwe, Omochere and an own-goal by Cheyenne Dunkley - with three goals to Fleetwood's name at the last meeting at the Montgomery Waters Meadow (name at the time), there is no doubt a similar result will be appreciated this time round, especially the clean sheet, something Town have failed to achieve in five matches this season.

WHAT STEVEN WHITTAKER HAD TO SAY AHEAD OF THE GAME

"We aren't far away, the last few performances are more what we are looking for, but we have switched off in vital times and have been punished for it. We're looking to bounce back against Shrewsbury and hopefully kickstart our season with a home win, I want to win every game and I am sure the players are no different.

"We don't go into games thinking we aren't capable of beating anyone in this league, we have shown that we are capable of beating anyone in this league - each game is an individual one and each are valued as three points on the day. We just need to do our jobs to the best we can so the players can go and perform which means we take each game as it comes and the points will come.

"I'm expecting a reaction and I am hoping we can up our levels going into the next game, we want to pride ourselves in home performances and the stat of ours one loss in the last 10 at home before Cambridge makes here a hard place to come."

Report: Nine men of Town fall to defeat at home to Shrewsbury

26 August 2023

Sponsored by

Fleetwood Town narrowly lost out 1-0 to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon in their Sky Bet League One encounter at Highbury Stadium.

Dan Udoh's first half strike from close range was the difference ast Highbury on Saturday, with Town going down to ten men with Jay Lynch seeing red for his tackle on Ryan Bowman late in the first half.

Josh Earl was also shown a straight red for an off the ball incident late in the game, and despite Town throwing everything at Shrewsbury, it is a second consecutive defeat on home soil for the Cod Army.

It was a slow start to the game on the Fylde Coast, and within the first few minutes, Shrewsbury man Jordan Shipley went down holding his knee following a collision with Fleetwood defender Shaun Rooney.

The visitors were made to make an early substitute, with Shipley making way for Mal Benning for a like for like swap.

On Fleetwood’s first meaningful attack, Josh Earl found a yard of space on the left flank and delivered a great ball into the box for Jack Marriott and the other attacking players, and it was eventually cleared away for a Town corner – from the resulting set-piece, Rooney headed wide.

Town had a glorious chance to take the lead with 18 minutes on the clock. Rooney found Ryan Graydon on the right side, he played an early ball into the box for Marriott – who had to throw himself at the ball, just failing to get the all-important touch to send it into the back of the net.

Marriott was getting himself more involved in the match and thought he had opened his account for the season. Graydon did so well to beat his man on the inside, and when the ball was pulled back to the former Peterborough striker, it looks in, but Chey Dunkley was there to block it out of nowhere.

Junior Quitirna had Town’s next big chance. The ball fell kindly to the creative midfielder and on the half-volley again thought he had scored! The initial shot hit the near post, rolled across the line before being cleared away – what an opportunity!

Despite Town’s dominance, it was the Salops who took the lead through a mistake from Robertson in the middle of the park. With a loose touch, Udoh found himself with half the pitch to run into and beat Lynch between the sticks, which he did with calmness and composure.

The madness continued as within two minutes, Lynch headed down the tunnel for an early bath after seeing a straight red for a tackle on Ryan Bowman – who beat the keeper to the ball and then felt the touch – not the ending to the half Scott Brown would have wanted.

Academy graduate Stephen McMullan replaced Danny Mayor just before the interval, making his second ever appearance for the Club since arriving last year.

Fleetwood’s boss Brown made one change at the break, with Carl Johnston coming on for Robertson in midfield, a position the Northern Ireland international knows from his Under-18s days in the Academy.

With Town down the ten men, they still looked comfortable in possession, and caused the visitors some issues on set-pieces, but whenever the ball was loose in the box, it was always a blue shirt that got to the ball first.

Salop midfielder Carl Winchester gambled just before the hour mark after Udoh’s cheeky backheel, and when he got into a shooting position, he panicked and swiped wildly – was a let off for the Cods.

Marriott did eventually put the ball into the back of the net after Quitirna found him with a lovely curling cross from the left side. As the ball hit the netting, the linesman’s flag went straight up, it must have been close.

It was all Fleetwood for a spell, with the Salops happy to sit deep and soak up pressure. Graydon worked the ball well 25-yards from goal and looked to curl one past Marosi – but the keeper parried it to safety.

With twenty minutes left, young forward Theo Williams was introduced into the fray, replacing Marriott up top. After joining the club in the summer from Sheffield United, and scoring two in two for the Development Squad, it was a great moment for the youngster.

With the clock winding down, the decision was made to send Rooney up front for his ariel presence and did win two headers inside the box, both being glanced away from the far post out for goal kicks.

Josh Earl was involved in an off the ball incident late into stoppage time and saw straight red. We will have to see what went on in the highlights to see that one back.

Town suffer their second home defeat of the season, but there will be some positives to pick out from the performance for Scott Brown and his coaching staff. Charlton up next for the Cods next weekend in the capital.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Lawal, Robertson (Johnston, 46’), Vela © (Broom, 80’), Mayor (McMullan, 45’) (GK), Marriott (Williams, 73’), Quitirna (Hayes, 80’), Graydon, Nsiala, Rooney, Earl.

Subs not used: Holgate, Patterson.

Shrewsbury XI: Marosi (GK), Anderson, Feeney, Winchester, Bowman (Mata, 63’), Udoh (Phillips, 63), Perry (Bennett, 80’), Bayliss, Dunkley ©, Shipley (Benning, 8’), Kenneh.

Subs not used: Burgoyne (GK), Hernes, Flanagan.
