Fleetwood Town’s Under-21s carried on their rich run of form in the league on Tuesday night as they walked away from the Dransfield Stadium 3-0 winners over Hull City.

Matt Lawlor’s young Cods have permanently been placed near the top of the Professional Development League so far this season, as they currently find themselves in fourth place with two games in hand over Birmingham City at the top of the pile.

After a narrow 1-0 loss to Burnley in their outing before the Tigers clash, it was all about getting back to winning ways for Fleetwood and that they did as, from the off, they looked to be on the attacking foot with Sam Glenfield opening the scoring on the night.

His strike from the edge of the area broke the deadlock in the clash and it was certainly deserved as Town had most of the possession and created the better chances before the break, with pressure coming from front to back, making the team talk at half-time an easy one.

Sam Fishburn added two more goals in the second half, as he looked to add to his goal tally for the season; his first came from an interception from Glenfield as he then reversed the play for Town’s number nine, who slotted home, before reacting quickest to a parry from the goalkeeper to make it three.

There was another brilliant moment for the Academy in the 85th minute as Under-16 Alessio Ruocco came on to make his debut for the Development Squad, replacing Dom Richmond for the last few minutes, and this certainly shows the progression available from our Category-Two set-up.

A top save rounded off the fixture by Stephen McMullan as he was on hand to tip Aaron Connelly’s free-kick onto the post at full stretch, which was a crucial save, as that meant the clean sheet was maintained in what was a performance to remember from the Under-21s.

Town XI: McMullan (GK), Johnson (C) (Fletcher 70’), Wright-Ocana, Simons, Butterworth, Hoyle, Richmond (Ruocco 85’), Glenfield, Fishburn, White, Brown.
