Brown: The winning mentality is everything!

Fleetwood Town head coach Scott Brown spoke to the media following his sides 1-0 victory over Championship side Wigan Athletic in Round One of the Carabao Cup.

After picking up the three points on Saturday over Plymouth Argyle, Brown had another home match, this time against the Latics. Ged Garner’s goal on the night was the difference between the two sides, seeing the Cod Army now in the hat for Round Two.

Here is what Scott had to say in his post-match interview:

On the match…

“I only found out after the game on Saturday that the lads hadn’t won at home for eight months which shows the quality of the lads and how much they’re buying into what we want to do.

I think the talent is showing, especially in the last few games with the urgency to go and win the ball back, but also the shape as soon as we lose the ball we go straight back into shape. I thought a couple of lads who came in today who did exceptionally well.

Ged [Garner] has not played too much football over the last couple of weeks, he’s been injured, and Harvey [Macadam] as well has been fantastic. CJ [Carl Johnston] is a player who plays right back, left back, left wing, right wing and he’s got a great understanding of the game, his knowledge of the shape, and his discipline when he’s not got the ball is great and that’s huge for us.”

On the winning mentality…

“It’s a good team spirit that we’ve got so far, but winning mentality is everything. You want to keep winning and we’ve got a huge game coming out on Saturday so hopefully that builds a lot of confidence as well going into that.

“We are taking it one game at a time and the last two have been huge for us as a group. It will be the same in training as we will do our homework and the lads here are great and for myself and Whits [Steven Whittaker] he was in a great situation and the Chairman has backed us, and results are showing that.

“For us you need a good squad. You need quality coming off the bench and now we have that. It’s exception and now we need to make sure that those who aren’t starting, their fitness levels are right up there and that they are ready to go and today, those who haven’t had much time on the pitch, they were ready and showed us what they can do.

On the trip to Morecambe this weekend…

“It’s always about bragging right in a local derby. For us it’s about getting the work done on the training ground, making sure we are organised and making sure we are as fit as possible and go from there. We will rest tomorrow and make sure we are 100% switched on for Saturday.

As a football manager, you’re always going to get headaches and that’s what you want, you want people fighting for positions, you want strikers scoring goals, wingers doing well and defenders also playing well so for me it’s encouraging as all the lads are all taking on board what we are asking of them, and they are setting standards.”
