Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the press after Fleetwood Town’s 1-0 win over Gillingham in Sky Bet League One on Tuesday.

The Cod Army scored the only goal of the game just two minutes into the game when Kyle Vassell converted from the penalty spot after Ged Garner was fouled in the area. Town’s win over the Gills makes it three consecutive wins for the first time since August.

Here's what he has to say…

On the performance…

“It was a good team performance against a strong team. You know exactly what you’re going to get. You have to make sure you win the battles and deal with the second balls. We were strong physically and mentally tonight.

“We got off to a fantastic start getting a penalty which was quite a blatant penalty from where I was positioned. We did well in the first half because we competed and took the sting out of the game and to get in one-nil was rewarding and good.

“We had to be strong with set pieces and we did that. I’m just we’ve not scored a second when we’ve had chances on the counterattack to put the game to bed. When we needed to defend, we did, when Alex Cairns needed to make a save, he did. We did everything we needed to do to win tonight.”

On the team…

“Sometimes you have to pick teams for specific games, and we did that tonight, so we had to mix it up and that’s why we’ve got a squad.

“Competition for places is what we want and thrive on because the players on the pitch constantly have to be looking over their shoulders and making sure that they're performing because if they're not, there will be others desperate to take their shirt.

“The back three did really well. I changed it around tonight because I knew exactly what it was going to be like, so I wanted three centre-halves in there with Danny Andrew and Jayson Donacien as wingbacks. Wes has played quite a lot of games after a long layoff, so I wanted to give him a rest.”
