Head coach Joey Barton says his side were “superb” in their record-breaking 5-0 win against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park on Wednesday night.

Barton’s side achieved their biggest ever win in the Football League, and they did it in style having gone four goals ahead after just 29 minutes.

Two goals each from Ched Evans and Wes Burns put town 4-0 ahead in the first half, and an emphatic win was sealed with an Ashley Hunter stunner after half time.

Here are the key quotes from Joey’s post match interview…

On a perfect response to Saturday’s late draw with Rochdale…

“I thought we were superb, especially to respond to conceding a 95th minute goal at the weekend. It's a testament to the group, the way they responded has been first class.

“To score four against a side who were in the play-offs last year, we knew it would be a tough place to come. They've got a lot of talent in their side, but we felt that if we could impose our game on them opportunities would arise.

“It certainly panned out that way, so it is always nice when it comes together like that. But the main thing for me was getting a clean sheet. You attack together as a team and you defend together as a team, and I thought both sides of the ball today the lads were really first class.

“The challenge for us now is to keep that going, it’s just the start of our journey in coaching at Fleetwood Town. For us, we won’t be getting too high or too low, its three points on the board. Yes it’s nice to score goals away from home, but we’ve got a really tough fixture away at Charlton on Saturday.”

On the strike partnership between Paddy Madden and Ched Evans…

“When you've got the quality we’ve got in our side, with the likes of Ched and Paddy, who I thought was outstanding tonight.

“He hasn't managed to get a goal, he’s a real team player, but when you look at the goal scoring records of those two, certainly in these divisions, if you can get them into the team there is going to be goals.”

On squad rotation…

“We knew the threats that Scunthorpe posed defensively and we’ve tried to counter-act that. We felt they would bring the game to us, and the first 10 were quite even and then we managed to pick them off. As a manager you think “what’s the response from the lads, and after conceding a last minute goal,” – I can’t ask for any more from them. If they keep doing that and responding in the right manner well be in a fantastic place so long may it continue.”

On a solid defence…

“Craig Morgan was outstanding tonight alongside Ash Eastham. James Husband is a credit to his profession, he obviously started for Norwich against Birmingham, played 70 minutes and was not first choice.

“He comes in today and looks like he’s been in our team for the whole pre-season.”
