10 November 2023

Fleetwood Town are at home for the second game in a row this weekend as they face Exeter City in a bid to extend their unbeaten record to six games on Saturday.

Fleetwood Town will commemorate Remembrance Day at this Saturday’s home fixture against Exeter City.

As a Club, we will honour our service men and women past and present before the match, the day of which marks the 105th anniversary of the Armistice signed that ended the First World War. We urge fans to be in their seats prior to kick-off to pay their respects on the day.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EXETER CITY

The Grecians make one of the longest journeys in the division when they come to Highbury Stadium on Saturday where they travel up North in disappointing form with only one win in their last ten matches – City will intend to travel in a hope they can turn their fortunes around against the Cods  who are in opposite form with only two losses in the last ten – City sit four places higher then Town in the table where results will be needed to be turned around to steer clear of the drop zone.

The Devon side are relatively new to Sky Bet League One following their promotion from Sky Bet League Two in 2022/23, but their return is welcome for fans and everyone associated with the club alike as the last time they were a division three side was the 2011/12 season - just over a decade later they’re back and looking to establish themselves again -  especially after last year’s valiant effort of a respectable 14th place finish at the first time of asking.

Despite the poor results, manager Gary Caldwell has provided Exeter with an identity on the pitch since he took the reigns on 24 October 2022 as the Grecians this season are averaging 56.1% possession per game, the fourth highest behind Portsmouth, Bolton and Peterborough, all sides who sit in the Play-Off places; unfortunately not all stats are kind reading for Caldwell as they sit third in the big chances missed table which shows they’re not as clinical as they would hope with only 12 goals scored this season, the joint third lowest in the league so far.

WHAT LEE JOHNSON HAD TO SAY PRE-MATCH

The Gaffer spoke to the local media on Thursday afternoon ahead of the Exeter City game, and here's what he had to say after five games unbeaten:

“I think the win on Tuesday has been good for the group. We’ve had some really good successes in recent weeks, we are now five games unbeaten but I wish we’d have taken more points from the set of matches, but all of this sets things up nicely for Saturday.

"We are going into this match wanting to get the three points and really cement what has been a fantastic week for the club. It’s a bit of a six-pointer on Saturday, isn’t it? I must say I’ve never quite understood that saying but now I do, and we want to draw in as many teams as possible who are above us.

"I always talk about the process, but you do naturally look at the league table if you lose or draw, and if you win you see if you’ve got out of the relegation zone, but the lads now have the play in the moment, and that will be the key.

“If we give everything and if we perform on the day as we have done in recent matches, we will have a very good chance of winning this game and that’s the message. It will keep us looking forward if we win on Saturday, and we are scoring more goals as a squad and I think we look more fluid in possession, but we need to cope with opposition moments better.”

THOSE WHO HAVE PLAYED FOR BOTH

Admiral Muskwe: Current Grecian Muskwe is a loanee on the southwest coast, a geographical contrast to his time on the northwest coast with Fleetwood between August 2022 and January 2023 – this season at St James’ Park the striker is a little closer to home as the Luton striker is still trying to apply his trade in the lower leagues with a dream of touching Rob Edwards’ current Premier League set up in Luton; Muskwe is yet to find the back of the net this season.

Sam Stubbs: Maybe a defender fans won’t have the clearest of memories about as Stubbs represented the Cod Army in the COVID years without fans in attendance or limited attendees and also with only nine games played, Stubbs however was a presence in the backline for Town standing at 6 foot 2 and even getting a headed goal for his duties, injuries hindered Stubbs’ chances in FY7 and a move directly to Exeter followed but Stubbs now has found form for Sky Bet League Two side Bradford City.

Jayden Stockley: Town’s number nine is a liked-character in this current Town side, known for his strength, hold-up play and a fond eye for goal where Stockley was also appreciated by Exeter fans as over two spells between January 2016 and June 2016 and then August 2017 to January 2019 and 98 appearances Stockley scored 51 goals, an impressive record at any level. The 30-year-old has scored goals everywhere he’s been from as high up North in Aberdeen and to as low South as Torquay.

Match Reports

Report: A dominate display sees Town beat Exeter at Highbury

11 November 2023

Fleetwood Town swept away their opponents Exeter City on Saturday afternoon and claimed all three points in a 3-0 win on the Fylde Coast.

Lee Johnson's side made it three wins from three in all competitions, extending the unbeaten run to six following the victory over Gary Caldwell's side. The three goals came in the first half thanks to Ryan Broom, Brendan Wiredu and Phoenix Patterson.

It was also an important clean sheet for the boys in Red and White as this was the first one since the 2-0 win over Cheltenham Town back at the start of October - plenty to build on going forward into a busy November and December schedule.

In the match, it didn't take the hosts long to get the opening goal of the game, and guess who it was? Yes, Broom was on hand to calmly slot his shot past the on-rushing Vijami Sinisalo to score his third goal in two matches at Highbury.

Town nearly doubled their lead moments later. Broom broke the offside trap down the right and this time saw his effort blocked, but then Danny Mayor followed up and saw his shot blocked then Brendan Wiredu was unlucky not to get the third attempt between the sticks.

Ben Heneghan - who wore the captain's armband for this match - was the next Fleetwood player to get a chance on goal. His header from Broom's cross was headed back across goal towards the far post, but the defender just watched it go narrowly wide.

Every time the visitors Exeter City got in promising positions, the attacks broke down in the final third. Town defended those opportunities well - you could see a clean sheet was on their mind after collecting one in midweek.

As the game reached the half-hour mark, the Grecians picked up the tempo and had shouts for a penalty after Jack Aitchison thought he was fouled inside the 18-yard box, but the referee stood firm and waved away the claims.

Despite Exeter pushing, Town broke down the other end and won themselves a corner. Pheonix Patterson delivered a peach of a ball into the box and up went Wiredu who headed across goal to score his second of the season.

Keeper Jay Lynch did have a quickfire round of shots on his goal, but as calm as the striker had been down the other end, he made two comfortable saves to keep the score as it was.

Patterson got his name on the scoresheet four minutes before half-time. He won the free-kick himself - looked inside the box at first glance - but from the set-piece, the former Waterford FC man did what he does best and that was bending it in from 20 yards to give his side a three-goal lead at the interval.

With the second half underway, the visitors made three changes, was it a message for them to go for it? Well within two minutes of the restart, Lynch was called into another double save. The second was a superb save, guiding the ball wide of his left-hand post.

One of the substitutes, Ilmari Niskanen thought he had narrowed the deficit when the ball fell to him inside the box, but with a team who are struggling for confidence, you could sense that when the ball was struck wide.

The match seemed to settle down with twenty minutes left on the clock. Town still looked to dominate the possession stats, whilst also causing problems for the visitors in the final third. How Jack Marriott didn't get on the scoresheet, only he will tell you. The forward had a number of really good attempts, but he was denied on all occasions by the Exeter keeper.

Town will be pleased with their performance, but will now have to wait two weeks until their next game as the match against Bristol Rovers on Saturday 18 November has been postponed due to the international break.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Wiredu (Simons, 68), Lawal, Mayor, Broom, Marriott (Tshimanga, 84), Heneghan (C), Omochere (Robertson, 79'), Rooney, Earl, Patterson (Stockley, 84').

Subs not used: McMullan (GK), Holgate, Graydon.

Exeter XI: Sinisalo (GK), Jules, Aimson (C), Hartridge (Niskanen, 46'), Trevitt, Muskwe, Scott (Wildschut, 46'), Kite, Sweeney (Dibate, 46') , Aitchson, Harper (Taylor, 73).

Subs not used: McDonald (GK), O'Connor, Cunningham.
