FLEETWOOD TOWN

The Cods travel to Derbyshire on Saturday afternoon as they take on Derby County in match week four of Sky Bet League One action.

Fleetwood - who lost to 3-1 away to Bolton Wanderers on the Tuesday gone - had their backs against the wall from the fifth minute at the ToughSheet Community Stadium as they were 1-0 down from a Victor Adeboyejo goal – Adeboyejo then scored two more within 30 minutes which left Fleetwood 3 down in the first-half. A consolation goal by Josh Earl with a few minutes to go was Town’s only goal of the night – leaving Bolton empty-handed and a response needed on the weekend.

Fleetwood are looking to replicate last years’ victory at Pride Park in a bid to improve the start to this season’s campaign as they look for their first three points of the season. It’s been a slow start so far for Town with only one point on the board out of a possible nine. Results haven’t gone the way Town want, but looking back on Fleetwood’s memorable meeting with The Rams last campaign, a similar result would be ideal to get a spring in Town’s step.

Scott Brown and his men are aware that results needs to change, but if they have taken maximum points from Pride Park before, Brown hopes it’s possible again. Brown knows the players need to react to their surroundings and is ready to start taking three points from teams to get some momentum going.

DERBY COUNTY

Saturday’s hosts Derby County have started their campaign with mixed emotions, a 2-1 loss to Wigan Athletic on the opening day of the season was responded to by a 3-0 win away at Burton Albion, but last time out Paul Warne’s men got silenced at home 2-1 by Oxford United – Martyn Waghorn’s consolation goal with three minutes to go didn’t make any difference to who took full-points out of that game in the end as the Rams are still looking for their first positive result at home this campaign.

With being one point off a Play-Off position last season, the Rams are looking to be in the Play-Off places again this year, or one better in the automatic spots – a slow start however, makes that task a little more challenging if they don’t start to pick up points to climb the Sky Bet League One table; Derby’s mix of youth and experience is what head coach Paul Warne is hoping will get the best out of his squad to achieve their aims this season – a win and a clean-sheet under the Rams’ belt does bear better viewing then the Cods start this season, though.

With 25,292 in attendance at Pride Park to watch Derby lose 2-1 to Oxford on Tuesday, an attendance that is similar to the whole population of Fleetwood itself, Derby will be hoping for a similar turnout with fans hoping they can get their first home win this season – Town are unbeaten against Derby though in competitive meetings and will take that in their stride to keep that record going.

With Fleetwood’s first time playing away at Pride Park, it was the Cods who came out victorious thanks to a spectacular volley 25 yards out from Jayden Stockley which was deflected into his own net by Joe Wildsmith and a calm, slotted finish after some impressive solo work from Carlos Mendes-Gomes on the half hour mark meant the Cods took maximum points to Lancashire.

WHAT SCOTT BROWN HAD TO SAY

“We’ve watched the game back from last season and have an understanding of how we played. They’ve changed up a bit since then as they’ve moved to a back three. As I always say, it’s all about us, it’s about following our game plan and if the lads switch on and follow it for 90 minutes, we do well and did that often-last season.

“We’ve started sloppy, so we need to get back up. That’s the good thing about football, there’s always another game on Saturday and we need to make sure we get our heads around it. We’re going away to Derby, which is going to be a tough game in a big stadium, and we need to make sure we turn up and defend as a unit.

“You’ve got to try and quieten the crowd, as they have a huge fanbase, so there are no excuses for us. We need to turn up and compete for the ball when we can, and when we create chances, we need to put the ball in the back of the net but also focus on the work needed at the back – we can win games 1-0.”

Report: Town fall to a narrow defeat against Derby at Pride Park

Fleetwood Town fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Derby County on Saturday afternoon at Pride Park.

In a game which saw both sides create gilt-edged chances, it was the hosts who took the spoils in Derbyshire as Martyn Waghorn’s first-half goal was enough to take all three points, despite Town having one chalked off and two more strikes hitting the woodwork.

The Rams came out the gates the quicker of the two sides as they had their first chance just 60 seconds into the game. After a coming together between Waghorn and Ryan Broom, the forward headed wide of the near post, not troubling Jay Lynch at the time.

Another Waghorn header soon came for the hosts, which again went wide of the mark, and that was followed up by an audacious volleyed attempt from Craig Forsyth from inside the area but that, much like the first two efforts, went wide of Lynch’s goal.

Scott Brown’s men would have thought they’d found the way through 18 minutes in as Ryan Graydon played Jayden Stockley through, with the forward driving his strike into the bottom left corner, past the keeper, but the linesman deemed him to be in an offside position.

In fact, Derby went down the other end not long after and made the game 1-0 as Conor Washington tried his luck with an effort from the edge, which fell to the feet of Waghorn, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to open the scoring at Pride Park.

Fleetwood reacted to going a goal down well as they went on the offensive, creating some good opportunities. The first came from Stockley as he laid the ball off to Danny Mayor whose effort went over before Graydon was stopped just before firing from close range.

It was an even game up until the halfway point from there, with the only real chance coming for the Cods as Stockley rose highest to latch onto a ball into the box, his effort looked like it was destined for the goal, but he was denied by the inside of the post.

The hosts started the second half like they did in the first, as they created better chances in the opening stages. First, they had a goalmouth scramble, which was eventually cleared by Lynch before Carl Johnston had to step in and stop Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s counter-attack.

With 20 minutes to go, Derby came close to adding to their lead as substitute James Collins fired into the side netting from close range, but Town reacted well once again as another substitute in Promise Omochere had an effort of his own, which was blocked well by the hosts.

That chance from Omochere seemed to change the momentum of the game late on as Omochere headed a dangerous effort on target soon after, which had to be stopped by Joe Wildsmith, and Junior Quitirna tried one from range seven minutes later, and that had to be dealt with as well by the Derby number one.

Even with the change in tides of momentum, Derby held out strong in the latter stages of the game and managed to keep the Cods out meaning the three points on the day were theirs - all focus for Brown and his men will now shift to the Shrewsbury game next week.

Today is the last chance for Fleetwood Town supporters to get their tickets for the Sky Bet League One match away at Pride Park to face Derby County.

Tickets will go off sale at 4pm on Friday 18 August online and at the Ticket Office at Highbury Stadium - here's a reminder that there will be NO POTG option for the travelling Cod Army.
