Fleetwood Town’s Under-21s got back to winning ways on Thursday afternoon after beating Coventry City 2-0 in their latest Professional Development League fixture.
The clash at Poolfoot Farm saw few attacks for both sides, as it was a well-contested game from start to end, with the only key chance from the opening 45 being from the penalty spot for the visitors after one of their forwards was fouled in the area but, luckily for Town, Stephen McMullan was at hand to stop the spot kick and keep it goalless going into the break.
This added a fire to the play Matt Lawlor’s side was producing and, midway through the second half, they managed to break the deadlock and put themselves into the lead. The opener came from a corner, played in by a trialist, straight onto the head of a club veteran – and Under-18s coach – Nathan Pond who comfortably nodded home.
In an inspired bit of management, Tom Hoyle took a spot up top in the game, which was a bit different to his normal position in the backline, but he seemed comfortable from the point he relocated and this showed as he doubled Town’s lead just before the end making it an easier end for Fleetwood as they now carried a two-goal lead with the final whistle looming.
The referee then ended the clash meaning Lawlor’s men got retribution for their loss earlier in the month to Barnsley and showed the form they had before Christmas which saw them pick up five wins from six games against the Sky Blues, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan Athletic, and Peterborough United.
