Head coach Charlie Adam talked about the key points from his side’s narrow defeat to Cambridge United at the Cledara Abbey Stadium straight after the game.

It was heartbreak for the Cods on the road this Saturday afternoon as Sulley Kaikai’s injury-time goal, added on to Lyle Taylor’s opener, meant they would take all three points, even with Promise Omochere’s header in the 76th minute.

Here’s what Charlie said after the game:

On the game as a whole…

“I thought we did well in large spells of the game today against Cambridge, who were aggressive and knew what they were doing throughout, but big moments change games and in the 92nd minute, we lose a goal which is disappointing.

“There are always momentum swings in games; we had control of the game and then they score the goal, we bounce back from that quickly and, at that point, you hope your team can go and win the game, if not then take a point.

“There were good signs in terms of the things we’ve been working on throughout the week and managed to bounce back from that goal we conceded, but late goals have cost us this year and we’ll need to address that in the week."

On sticking together as a group…

“We’ll now focus on what we can do better as a group, and we will go again at home against Portsmouth. The confidence is already in the team, they’ve got a good spirit and have shown they are connected and together since I’ve been in.

“The players and staff are together and that is what will get us results – we’ve just said that to them in there. Unfortunately, it’s not happening for them, it’s not breaking for them, but we will take this result on this chin and will stick together.

“They’re my players now, I enjoy every moment with them and enjoy every day coming into work to make them better. But ultimately, we need to start winning football matches and we need to start winning them quickly.”

On Boyes and bringing players back from injury…

“I thought Harry [Boyes] came in today and did very well, he got 90 minutes after not playing for a few weeks and showed that balance that we needed today by putting some good crosses into the box.

“Danny Mayor also came back into the side after returning from injury and he is a quality player who won the league last year, we have to get him back fit, Promise [Omochere] is back in now, and we need to get Ryan Broom back involved.

“We have to get these players back on the pitch because when they are, we know they work well with the team and can cause opposition problems. When we can get these back available, we can get some quality work into them.”
