Report: Catching up with all things Wrens from the weekend

Fleetwood Town Wrens Ladies were in action on Sunday afternoon, with both the Reserves and Development Squad playing in local derbies.

The Reserves were back in league action as they hosted Accrington Stanley Women at Brews Park, and it was set to be a great clash between two very attacking sides.

Fleetwood started really well and took control early on in the game. Ruby Farrell was unlucky not to put the hosts in front early on with the Stanley keeper making a superb save to deny the forward.

The hard work continued for Fleetwood who were still in search of the opening goal of the game, but unfortunately it was the visitors who managed to strike first after a defensive mistake allowed Accrington into the game. The Ladies continued to play football and looked dangerous on the attack time and time again, but another defensive error from Fleetwood allowed Accrington to take a two-goal lead.

The scoreline didn't damage the performance from the Wrens as they hunted for a deserved goal, and that goal came very soon after. Robyn Hodkin managed to find the back of the net for Fleetwood - which was a a more than deserved goal - and with the clock ticking down to half-time, Fleetwood switched off for a second and Accrington put in a third.

The second half unfolded and the dominant possession continued for the Wrens. Louise Stritch get herself on the scoresheet, and the score was looking to reflect just how much Fleetwood were in the game despite being down. It was a spirited performance from the Red and White Army, and one on another day which would go the other way around.

Olivia Hooper was named Player of the Match for her hard work and skills on the pitch, and to mark it off, it was her first game for the Wrens Ladies.

Regarding the Development Squad, they were on the road taking on Horwich St Mary's Ladies, travelling with a depleted squad meant it was always going to be a bit ask but the ladies were up for it regardless.

Both teams started off the game well, competing and challenging, however it was the hosts who seemed to find form first and they took a healthy lead in the first half, asserting dominance through good attacking play.

Fleetwood continued to play well, and they did create a few chances within the final third of the pitch, but the one piece of quality from Alisha Rayworth got Town on the scoreshoot. The Development Squad had a number of chances after the goal, but just didn't have the clinical nature in front of goal.

It was a disappointing weekend in terms of results, but the coaching staff for both the Reserves and Development Squad were happy enough with the performances, and for the Ladies comittment to the cause.

Hopefully all three teams will be in action next Sunday, and full details on their fixtures will be announced in due course.
