Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad played out a goalless draw in their latest Professional Development League outing against Sheffield United at Poolfoot Farm on Tuesday afternoon.
Even though the deadlock wasn’t broken throughout the game, there were still some gilt-edged chances for both sides as they looked to find the all-important goal that would have led to all three points on the day.
One key chance for Fleetwood started at the back with Harrison Holgate and Will Johnson working well together to feed the ball out wide to Imari Samuels, who needed some minutes in his legs after joining on loan from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion on loan on Deadline Day.
He picked up the ball on the left, cut inside, and drove forwards into acres of space before playing a short pass back out wide to Pharrell Brown. The winger duked past his marker and decided to try his luck from range, but the effort was blocked by a defender and then went out for a corner.
Town’s number nine on the day, Theo Williams, was unlucky not to get on the score sheet as a first-team trio in Junior Quitirna, Xavier Simons, and Samuels all linked up to move the ball forwards from the Fleetwood half, before playing in Williams, whose effort was cleverly saved by the goalkeeper.
After the break, he had another chance to add to this season’s tally as good pressure from the front three forced an error from a defender, which the forward pounced upon and let off a powerful left-footed strike towards the bottom right corner, which went the wrong side of the post.
This was a valuable point for the Young Cods in terms of the league as they find themselves in fourth place, nine points from the top, with two games in hand after drawing with second place at the Club’s training complex – next up is a Premier League Cup knockout clash against Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.
