Fleetwood Town's Under-21s picked up all three points against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday afternoon down at Poolfoot Farm.

January signing Tommy Lonergan bagged himself a brace in the first half, and with not much to choose between the two sides in the latter, the match finished 2-0 to the young Cods meaning they currently sit 4th in the Professional Development League North table.

With light mist and rain falling on the Fylde Coast, Town got right at their opponents from the first whistle and had numerous attempts to go ahead before Lonergan opened the scoring, but the shooting boots just weren't firing.

With Town's high press and flair in the final third, the first goal came just after the half-hour mark. After some great football down the left-flank, the ball was played into the box for the former St. Patrick's Athletic forward to tap home from close range.

Matt Lawlor's side deserved to be ahead, but made sure they entered the break two goals to the good thanks to Lonergan's curling effort around the Wednesday keeper. The young forward broke into the box, brushed off the tall physical centre-half and just watch the ball curl into the far corner, just what he and the home side deserved.

The second half was a battle from the 46th minute to the 90th minute. The visitors knocked on the door a handful of times, but the back four of Town - which included Club Legend, Nathan Pond, stood strong and made the red wall hard to break down.

That is now three wins from their last five, with Sheffield United up next for Lawlor's side, who they will play on Tuesday 20 February at Poolfoot Farm in a 1pm kick-off.

Town XI: Boyes (GK), Johnson (C), Pond, Potter (Hoyle, 60'), Wright-Ocana, Trialist (Wilson, 4'), Glenfield, White, Brown (Richmond, 46'), Williams, Lonergan (Fishburn, 60').

Subs: Bellizia (GK).
