EXETER CITY

The Grecians welcome Fleetwood to Devon in a mood to change the hosts’ form after two defeats on the bounce - a 3-0 defeat to Derby and a 1-0 defeat to Lincoln City last time out - City were in good form however before their last two losses with five wins and two draws in their ten previous which steered the side from St James’ away from the relegation zone.

Gary Caldwell’s side do sit almost in the middle of the Sky Bet League One table with 39 points in 14th place - seven points from the drop zone and 14 points behind the play-off places - a respectable second half of the season change in form after a slow start.

Since Exeter were promoted to League One after finishing runners-up in Sky Bet League Two in the 2021/22 season, they set comfortable foundations to build on with a 14th place finish last campaign and with this season having ten clean sheets in 34 matches and an average possession percentage of 53.4% - which has them 6th in the table for that number, Caldwell’s side do have the starter-pack for sustainability in this division - however, from Caldwell’s perspective, the ball just needs to be put in the  back of the net more.

If the Grecians pick up points and finish higher then last years 14th, it will be Exeter’s highest League One finish since 2010/11 when they finished eighth, 14 years ago.

WHO HAS PLAYED FOR BOTH

A few players have played in Devon for Saturday’s hosts and Lancashire for the Cods in their playing careers.

Jayden Stockley

Town’s current number nine is a liked-character in this current Town side, known for his strength, hold-up play and a fond eye for goal where Stockley was also appreciated by Exeter fans as over two spells between January 2016 and June 2016 and then August 2017 to January 2019 and 98 appearances Stockley scored 51 goals, an impressive record at any level. The 30-year-old has scored goals everywhere he’s been from as high up North in Aberdeen and to as low South as Torquay.

Sam Stubbs

Maybe a defender fans won’t have the clearest of memories about as Stubbs represented the Cod Army in the COVID years without fans in attendance or limited attendees and also with only nine games played, Stubbs however was a presence in the backline for Town standing at 6 foot 2 and even getting a headed goal for his duties - injuries hindered Stubbs’ chances in FY7 and a move directly to Exeter followed but Stubbs now has found form for Sky Bet League Two side Bradford City with 25 games played so far this season.

Zak Jules

A player who found himself at Highbury Stadium only on a temporary basis on loan from Milton Keynes Dons in January 2022, Jules made 20 appearances for the Cod Army as he returned back to his parent club in the following Summer - Exeter acquired Jules’ services in July 2023 and he has played 31 matches so far this season, mainly on the left of a back three - the most recent familiar face potentially in the hosts back line this weekend.

WHAT THE GAFFER HAD TO SAY

As Town look to build on the mood around camp Charlie Adam and his staff have brought to the club, Exeter are the new target down Charlie Adam’s scope in a bid to climb the table and to do the double over a side for the first time this season.
