Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce experienced defender Ben Heneghan has joined the club on a permanent deal.

The six-foot-three centre-half heads to the Fylde Coast from Sheffield Wednesday, who had a promotion-winning season from Sky Bet League One last campaign.

Heneghan, 30, began his professional career at Chester back in 2014 and had a successful stint there before moving above the border to Motherwell, a club in which he would make 50 appearances for just 14 months.

A move to Sheffield United was on the cards next for the defender before successful back-to-back loan spells with Blackpool, for whom he played 80 games in two campaigns.

From Bramall Lane to Plough Lane, Heneghan made the move to AFC Wimbledon in 2020 and was an ever-present in the back line as he made more than 70 appearances in his 18-month stay down south, with a move to Hillsborough coming soon after.

The defender now joins the Cods, becoming Lee Johnson’s first signing since taking charge, and will now wear the number 16 for the 2023/24 season – he will be eligible to face Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.
