It was a proud moment for young defender Finlay Armstrong who made his debut in tonight’s 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers at Highbury.
After an unfortunate tackle meant fellow debutant Adam Montgomery had to go off with an injury, the Under-21s full-back was called upon and certainly made an impression in front of the Fleetwood faithful as he played brilliantly down the left wing.
Here’s what Finlay had to say after his debut:
On making his senior debut…
“I was ready to go and it was a proud moment so hopefully there will be many more appearances to come. This is the moment you work for all your career, from a young lad all the dedication and hard work, with family there tonight watching it’s a special moment.”
“I came on a little bit earlier than I expected; me and Monty [Adam Montgomery] have both been out injured so the plan initially was to do 45 [minutes] each, but obviously he got a knock, so I got the call up a little bit earlier”.
“Now I’ve had my debut, I’m hungry for more; I won’t be getting carried away - more hard work is to come now. I missed the whole of pre-season through injury, but the lads have been great when I’ve been in and around it in training and they’ve been good with us.”
On bouncing back from a rough start to the season…
“It’s been a difficult few days, and a difficult start to the season, but we played some good stuff tonight and a win on the board won’t do us any harm, so hopefully we can kick on now.
“You’ve got two teams there that are probably struggling for results so, it was a big game, we treated it like any other game, to get the win in front of the home fans means a lot”.
“Laws [Matt Lawlor] is great, he got around the lads and he understands it was a bit of a difficult situation, but he didn’t change much, he kept the same values that the club go by really just working hard for each other and I think that showed out there tonight.”
