Fleetwood Town defender Shaun Rooney spoke to the local media on Thursday afternoon and previewed his sides Sky Bet League One clash against Stevenage at Highbury.

The 27-year-old has played a huge role in Town's recent unbeaten run - which stands at six unbeaten in all competition - and even managed to score his first goal of the season against Kidderminster Harriers in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

In Rooney's pre-match interview, the right back talked about the experience within the group, the impact of new manager Lee Johnson and his contract.

Below are some of the key quotes from the pre-match interview:

On the latest form…

“I feel that everybody is together after us being in a place we didn’t want to be in at the start of the season. It can happen but as a group, we’ve pulled ourselves together and yes, the new manager has had an impact.

“Hopefully we can get out of the bottom four, and I hope the teams around us don’t start picking up points as well. Our main aim is to get out of the relegation zone but to try and climb that league table and see where we are come April.

“I have enjoyed working with this gaffer [Lee Johnson] and I also enjoyed working with the previous gaffer, Scott Brown so for me it is about enjoying playing football and that’s all I ask for myself, and I hope the team are the same.

“It hard to see anybody lose their job and never nice, but I am here, and I have to fit for my place and try and make myself better.”

On the core group of experienced players…

“Yes, we have a strong core of experienced players, but getting Brendan [Wiredu] back in the team has been good. We have a strong defence, and with Big Ben [Ben Heneghan], he just heads anything and he’s brilliant at it, he’s absolutely amazing.

"Ben has brought a lot to the team. He’s a leader and talks to us on the park and as I said, he loves a tackle and being involved and he’s amazing to work with and happy he’s here. And with Brendan, he will also head anything and tackle anything in his way and it’s good to see.”

On Stevenage this weekend…

“I have never come across Stevenage in my playing career so it will be a new challenge for me on Saturday.

“With Steve Evans [Stevenage Manager] from Glasgow, hopefully I can give him a bit of stick on the sideline. On a serious note, a lot of respect for him as he’s got Stevenage flying in the league, but we’ve just got to go against them and hopefully get the win.”
