Head coach Scott Brown spoke to the media after his side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Cheltenham Town on Saturday afternoon.

It was a tough watch for the 100-plus travelling supporters as Town struggled to make an impact on the game, which saw Alfie May volley in the winner 60 minutes into the game.

Here’s what the gaffer had to say after the game:

On this afternoon’s performance…

“That was disappointing; I think was on me a little bit as well because I put faith in the lads that did well the other night and I think tiredness crept into the squad. There will be a lot of changes coming up on Tuesday night as we need to be fresh for that game.

“We didn’t have any energy and didn’t have the quality on the ball either. We are normally neat and tidy, but we were sloppy today and gave away the ball too often. We knew what they wanted to do; they were sitting in a low block waiting for us to play through the middle of the park.

“The tiredness from the schedule showed today; as soon as we lost the ball, the reactions weren’t good enough, there wasn’t enough energy in the team, and they were off it in a positional sense as well, but I have to take responsibility for that one.”

On being able to play smarter…

“You speak to the lads, and they say that they’re ready to go and that’s a fantastic attitude, but from now on, we are going to have to think about how we are going to freshen things up. We went a wee bit too long, even from throw-ins as everyone knows Jayden [Stockley] is a unit who works hard.

“We’ve got to be a little bit smarter, play to people’s feet and be able to go around the corner, but we just went route one which is disappointing because we’ve worked on that over the last couple of weeks and they went back to just playing safe this afternoon.

“We didn’t have a shot on target and that is the biggest problem. We’ve come here and haven’t had good enough deliveries into the box, we didn’t anticipate things well, and they worked harder than we did and probably deserved the victory.”
