Fleetwood Town has made the step up to the Northern Ireland national team after receiving a call-up ahead of their EURO 2024 qualifier against Kazakhstan this evening.
Johnston, who marked his 50th appearance for Town against MK Dons in April, has been rewarded for his hard work over the last season as he has been added to the senior national squad for the first time after Jamal Lewis withdrew on Thursday.
The 21-year-old must have impressed manager Michael O’Neill recently as he was invited to the Northern Ireland national camp at St George’s Park last month, where he joined 29 other professionals ahead of their EURO double-header.
Now, the Town defender now carries on his international journey as he has already featured for the country in three different age groups – Under-17s, Under-19s, and Under-21s – with the senior team being the peak of his journey.
Northern Ireland line up for their second game this month against Kazakhstan this evening, with Johnston in the ranks, as they look to bounce back from their narrow 1-0 loss to Denmark which took place on Friday.
