Report: Carlisle clash at Highbury ends honours even on Boxing Day

26 December 2023

Fleetwood Town played out a score-draw against Carlisle United at Highbury Stadium, with the game finishing up 1-1 on Boxing Day.

The two goals both came before the break, with the only key chances from the initial 45, as a long-range effort from Owen Moxon put the visitors into the lead before Jayden Stockley pegged Town back into the game not long after from a Phoenix Patterson delivery.

It was a very lacklustre start from both sides to the fixture as no chances were created in the first 20 minutes, but it was the visitors who broke the duct soon after as a drilled shot from the edge by Moxon flew into the bottom left corner, giving Carlisle the lead.

That lead, however, lasted less than 10 minutes as Patterson’s low delivery was bundled into the goal from close range by Town’s number nine, Stockley, as he ended the goal drought at Highbury and put the game back on level terms heading into the break.

Supporters at Highbury had to wait until the second half for the next chance, and it was a big one for Carlisle as Sean Maguire wriggled his way through Town’s defence, played the ball back to Jack Robinson, whose effort was blocked off the line by Harrison Holgate.

Not long after this, Carlisle was on the attack once again down the left and, after they played a dinked cross towards the near post, it was Maguire who was there to nod towards goal and, fortunately for Lee Johnson’s side, his header went the wrong side of the post.

More pressure from the away side followed this and former Cod Ryan Edmondson forced Jay Lynch into a mistake at the back meaning the forward could nick the ball inside the Town area. He then tried to chip the goalkeeper, but his effort went just wide of the near post.

Town reacted well to this as Darren Way signalled a double change, which saw the return of Junior Quitirna after a long-standing injury and he was crucial in creating chances after that, as Marriott fired high and wide before Junior saw his effort deflect wide from range.

With not long left to go, both sides looked for the all-important goal in the six-pointer, with Town firing off target before Carlisle managed to capitalise on a mistake at the back where substitute Jordan Gibson drove towards goal and forced a decent save from Lynch.

Town XI: Lynch (GK), Johnston, Wiredu, Lawal, Stockley, Marriott (Tshimanga 73’), Heneghan (C), Holgate (Dolan 63’), Earl, Patterson (Hayes 88’), Asamoah (Quitirna 63’).

Blues XI: Breeze (GK), Armer, Moxon, Lavelle (C) (Barclay 90+5'), Edmondson, McCalmont, Charters (Gibson 73’), Robinson, Mellish, Maguire (Plange 73’), Emmanuel.
