Johnson: We lacked detail and quality at times

Manager Lee Johnson spoke to the media after Fleetwood Town played out a one-all draw with Carlisle United at Highbury on Boxing Day.

Owen Moxon – who scored against the Cods back on the opening day of the season – broke the deadlock in the game with his long-range effort before Jayden Stockley drew the Cods level eight minutes later - following an excellent team move.

Lee Johnson’s side pushed for a late second-half winner, but the points were ultimately shared on the day – here’s what Lee had to say after the game:

On this afternoon’s outcome…

“We’ve got to be honest and say we lacked detail, and we lacked quality at times, but we’re asking the same set of lads to churn it out at the moment - with so many injured. The boys are working hard.

“They’re an honest bunch; we’ve conceded the first goal again - we’ve given the opposite a leg-up by a poor mistake/poor communication.

“We’ve done well to come back twice in two games, and we’ve certainly shown character in that sense, but it would be nice to get a goal up and for us to have the opportunity to hold onto something.”

On committed individual performances…

“Brendan [Wiredu] got man of the match; he’s so athletic and he’s very good at reading anything that comes in – he really comes alive in those circumstances. First half and second half he certainly showed his commitment to the cause.

“Bosun [Lawal] is doing a fantastic job for us, in terms of having to play in all parts of the back four; we just need more players to get back to their top form.

“We demanded more of our wide men at half-time and a little bit changed, but I can’t remember a cross that [Jayden] Stockley’s had the chance to attack. When you’ve got a player like that, it’s important that you play to their strengths.

“[Junior Quitirna returning] is a real bonus for us - any player that we have back fit and available. It’s going to be a really big January for us, there’s no doubting that.”
