Fleetwood Town Wrens Ladies kicked off their NWWRL season on Thursday evening in the perfect fashion as they beat Blackpool Ladies 3-0 in a Lancashire Derby at Poolfoot Farm.
As the game got underway, the Ladies looked a little disjointed and couldn’t find the flow of the game, with possession being given away on a few occasions, which led to the visitors being able to create some good opportunities.
With the way the game was panning out in the first half, the Seasiders would have thought they’d deserved to have gone into the break with the lead, but they struggled to convert the chances they had created.
After a half-time team talk, the Wrens Ladies came out an entirely different side, as they started to look like the team that showed so much promise in pre-season with relentless and determined attacks bombarding the visitors’ defence.
It wasn’t long before the hard work and high press paid off as Emily Jones managed to intercept the ball from Blackpool’s keeper as they tried to play out from the back, and she did brilliantly well by lobbing the keeper to put Fleetwood in front.
The Cods had found their flow causing endless issues for Blackpool in their box, it wasn’t long before Holly Hunter was brought down in Blackpool’s area awarding Fleetwood a penalty, which was calmly smashed into the back of the net by Emily Slater.
Fleetwood wasn’t done and continued to apply the pressure, in fast attacking spells and the relentless paid off after a super goal from Ellie Parkinson ensured Fleetwood kept all three points at home.
It was described as a great opening performance by all who watched the game at Town’s training complex and all involved in the win have their sights set on the next fixture already – well done Ladies!
