Brown: We need to get the mistakes out of our game

Head coach Scott Brown spoke to the media on Thursday afternoon ahead of his side's trip to face Charlton Athletic at the weekend.

Town, much like Charlton, are in need of three points on Saturday and both sides will be pushing to the max to try and make that happen when 3pm rolls around on the day.

Preparations have continued as normal for Fleetwood as they’ve had a full week to prepare for the fixture, with the hosts having a change of manager in recent days meaning it could be a completely new setup for the Cods to face at The Valley.

Ahead of the game, the gaffer had this to say:

On playing the Addicks on Saturday…

“You need to go away and frustrate the fans, Jason [Pierce] might change a lot up, he might not, so we don’t know what to expect as he’s an interim manager who’s just been appointed by the club. We always talk about ourselves, and focus on ourselves, so if we put our game plan out there, and play right, we’ve got a right good chance.

“Defensively, we need to be a lot better, we can’t be conceding this amount of goals or giving up the amount of chances that we are doing. Sometimes, it’s just an honest mistake that lets somebody through, but we need to get that out of our game and make sure that if anyone is making mistakes, it’s them.

“We need to be focused for 90 minutes, or 120 minutes, whatever we are going to play these days and make sure that we are ready for anything that teams throw at us. That’s a responsibility on us, but also on the lads as well, to have that willingness and desire to go and keep clean sheets.”

On sticking together through a tough period…

“We need to just focus up and stick together; we are going through a tough spell at the moment, but we will bounce back, we’ve got the belief in the squad and it’s the same for us in the backroom staff as well. This week, we’ve had the luxury of getting a lot of information into the lads due to not having a midweek game, which has been good.

“The last couple of games, we’ve played well in, but we just can’t put the ball in the back of the net. We need to be stronger mentally and ready for whatever comes our way, we need to be able to put the ball in the net, even if it just gives us something to hold onto as it would give the fans something to hold onto as well.

“We’re creating chances in games; we just aren’t putting them in the back of the net. We’ve not got a striker who’s been in form yet. I think the lads’ confidence is low, but we need to go into every game believing we can score - we’re still in the market looking for a striker, we want to add to the squad before the window closes and I believe we will do.”
