With various age groups of the Academy spending time abroad, it was the time for Under-16s to head overseas last week and they managed to win their third-place play-off in the Rey Cup in Iceland!

It was a jam-packed schedule for the young Cods over the last seven days as they were booked on a flight to head over to Reykjavík on Wednesday and prepared for their first group stage fixture the next day.

Three games would take place over the next two days seeing the group start and end in a positive way for Town. With two draws in as many games to start against Icelandic sides Grindavík and Austurland, it was all to play for in the final game against Stjarnan, which Fleetwood managed to beat 3-1 on Friday afternoon.

The knockout stage was then upon the Under-16s, and it was a side from the Unites States of America up first in the quarterfinals, and they were tough opposition, but out lads advanced after a testing 1-0 win.

It wasn’t a showing to remember in the semi-finals as South East African side Ascent Soccer beat them 3-0, but they avenged themselves in the third-place play-off final as they replicated the result, only in a positive fashion, against Icelandic side Njarðvík to round out a brilliant trip – and experience – for the young Cods.

Thanks to the organisers of the Rey Cup for having us over in Iceland and well done to all involved - hope to be back there again next year!
