Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce that young defender Kayden Hughes has been announced as the Under-18s captain for the 2023/24 season.

The 18-year-old has been at the Club since Under-12s, and will surely be a proud moment for the young defender with the opening match against Watford taking place at Poolfoot Farm on Saturday 19 August.

Hughes - a local lad who played for grassroots team Bispham Juniors Football Federation - got a taste of captaincy last season when Will Johnson made the loan move to non-league side Marine.

With being told the news by Under-18s coach Mark Yeates, Hughes said proudly: "I know I can lead the team this season.

"I showed my leadership qualities last season as a first year, and I want to be a role model and lead by example this season with how I am on the pitch, and also how I am off the pitch.

"My Gran does anything for me, she chauffeured me everywhere to games and training since I joined as an Under-12 and I can't wait to tell her the news as she will be very proud of me."

Yeates - who decided to give Hughes the captain's armband added: "There are some great characters in our group, but I have gone with Kayden because he became a leader when Will Johnson left on loan.

"He conducts himself well on and off the pitch, and he sets the examples and standards we want from all that come in as a first-year or second-year scholar.

"It's a huge honour to be named captain at any level, whether that be your local grassroots, Under-18s level or even the Premier League. It's given to you as you have qualities that other lads might not have, so there's no pressure on him, he just needs to be that person we all know Kayden is."
