Fleetwood Town came away victors from the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday evening after Josh Vela goal made all the difference on the night.

In what was an even game in terms of chances, Town looked towards their captain to put them ahead midway through the first half, after a double chance from loanee winger Carlos Mendes Gomes. The Cods had chances to extend their lead but, the game ended 1-0 to the good.

It was a well contested opening 15 minutes of the game, with the main talking points from that spell being challenges from both Nathan Thompson, on Callum Morton, and Shaun Rooney, on Hector Kyprianou, with each of them receiving bookings from the referee on the night.

Soon after, the hosts sprung into life with two quickfire opportunities which fell to forward Jack Marriott. The first forced a brilliant save at the near post from Jay Lynch and the second flew over the crossbar from 15-yards.

Town then answered that with two quick attacks of their own before opening the scoring midway through the half. Admiral Muskwe was picked out by Dan Batty for the initial effort, which was deflected just wide of the near post for a corner.

The deadlock was broken just after this as a flurry of chances were worked by Fleetwood as Carlos Mendes Gomes powerfully struck the ball towards goal twice, with Lukas Bergström managing to save the shots, but he then pushed the ball into the path of captain Vela, who confidently volleyed home.

Peterborough did try to level the scoring up before the half time break with Jack Taylor working a yard just outside the box and forced a good diving save from Lynch, before N.Thompson tried an effort from his own further out, but that flew well wide of the far post.

It was a quick start to the half for the Cods as they went close to doubling their lead in the 49th minute as Josh Earl played an inch-perfect ball to Mendes Gomes on the right, who picked out Muskwe, but his shot was deflected just wide of the near post.

After the hour mark, Town’s goal scorer was needed at the other end of the pitch as Harrison Burrows played Marriott through on goal, but Vela did well to track back and put it a last-ditch challenge to stop the shot.

Mendes Gomes looked like he was through one-on-one with 18 minutes to go after being picked out by a through ball from the midfield, but he seemed to have his shirt pulled and went to the ground, but no decision was made as Rooney ran onto the loose ball and fired over.

The hosts piled the pressure on at the end looking for an equaliser, with Lynch being called into action in the 79th minute, as he had to stay alert to tip Joe Ward’s cross from the right over the bar and out for a corner.

Town’s defence stayed stern as the ball was fired towards them in every way possible as the Cods rounded out their night in Peterborough with a win, a clean sheet, and a four-hour drive home.
