Everyone associated with Fleetwood Town Football Club is greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Ron Bellwood, who died yesterday at the age of 92.

Ron was our oldest known surviving former player, having made his debut for his home town club in April 1951 against Barrow Reserves in the Lancashire Combination.

He played a total of 148 games for Fleetwood, his only club, over a 12 year period.

A proud member of our Former Players Association, Ron was a regular attendee of the monthly gatherings of the FPA at Poolfoot until he became ill a few months ago.

Fleetwood Town Vice Chairman Phil Brown paid tribute to Ron, saying “As a club, we’re very proud of our links to all of our former players but Ron was particularly special to us, not just because he was our oldest known former player, but because he was the kindest, most generous and modest man I ever had the pleasure of knowing.

"He was a constant source of inspiration and support to me personally and to many others and I shall miss him immensely.”

All of our thoughts are with Ron’s family and many friends at this very difficult time.
