Fleetwood Town Head Coach Simon Grayson spoke to the press after his side overcame Ipswich Town 2-0 at Highbury Stadium in Sky Bet League One on Tuesday night.

The Cod Army started the brighter side with a reward for their efforts coming from Callum Connolly 11 minutes in as he guided Hill’s long throw into the far corner with a header; Town’s lead was doubled in the second half and deservedly so as Garner drilled home a second from 12 yards out. The scoreline stayed the same with the defence also standing tall to ensure a clean sheet and maximum points for Fleetwood.

Here’s what he had to say:

On the result...

“I thought we were very good tonight, there were some really good elements to our game, we were positive, and we made a really quick start with and without the ball, we got in their faces and never allowed them to settle.

“They have some good players, who with time on the ball they can really hurt you, but we never allowed them to do that because when we had possession with the ball, we were very composed and used it really well, our shape was really good, and we pressed them in certain areas, we dropped off when we needed too and we mixed up our game really well, overall it was a really good collective performance.”

On the team’s work ethic…

“Kyle Vassell was like a workhorse up the field and alongside him, you have Ged Garner in these little pockets, they’re both great players who work together really well and they have good attributes to understand each other, they have a really good partnership going.

“The midfield three utilised the ball really well, it was a great performance and a really pleasing one from the whole side and I can’t ask for any more as our back three was immense yet again when asked questions of them.”

On the squad’s application…

“It shows you how good the academy has been over the last few years, it’s been up to previous people to coach them and to educate them and I’m trying to improve them as well, when these young lads have missed out on games due to mistakes, they have responded really well which shows you how good of an attitude they have along with good characteristics which speaks volumes for them, and it speaks volumes for our academy as well.”

“We have been very solid in the system we play in; we could have won the game by three or four goals tonight. We have created a right balance where every player that comes into the team knows their job, they have to do which is testament to the players as they are taking it all in- they’re all playing with smiles on their faces.”
