Defender Darnell Johnson spoke to the club after making his debut and scoring in Fleetwood Town's 3-2 win over Cheltenham Town at Highbury on Saturday.

In the battle of the Towns, Fleetwood went behind at the start of the game, and even though The Robins drew level late on, the players dug deep in front of the fans at Highbury to claim maximum points.

Tom Clarke and Darnell Johnson opened their accounts for the campaign with Shayden Morris doing the same, scoring the winner in the final minute of the game as the Cod Army get their first win of the season.

Here’s what he had to say after the game:

On his emotions of his debut goal and start...

“I’m pleased to get my start and to help the lads get the three points that we really deserved today, it was really tough and an up and down game, but they’re the type of games where you have to stick together and grind out the result we needed.

“Hopefully that goal is the first of many this season, I am going to keep on working hard and going to try my best which means I can stay in the team, I will always put myself forward as a goal threat or if the team needs me centre back, left back or even in net I will do the job!”

On the match itself...

“Those type of games are rough and hard because at different stages of the game both teams are on top during it, but we had the perseverance and have to do the stuff that we practice doing during training which means we will eventually get the result.

“You can’t switch off in those types of games, they’re really different to the others, every second is important, those games there we know that our perseverance will really help us – the previous games we have played we have played decent but haven’t had the rub of the green, we knew this result would eventually come through.

On thriving off the fans....

“It was a brilliant atmosphere and it’s such a good feeling to have the fans behind you, we just want to impress them and work our socks off to please the fans and have a good game, we’re a very close group and we work really hard in training and all the lads know that if we dig in deep, we will come out on top.

“This year has been different because of the whole COVID situation, the club is a good place now and the manager has a good plan for what we want to do and it’s clear- hopefully, the fans can see what we’re trying to do because they really help.”
