Fleetwood Town's goalkeepers, ranging from our Under-9s all the way to the first-team, met up at Poolfoot Farm on Thursday afternoon for a special GK Day.

To start off the day, the first-team and Development Squad goalkeepers – Alex Cairns, Billy Crellin, Harry Wright, Tom Donaghy, and Luc Rees – all went off to do their normal training sessions, but what was different about Thursday was the rest of the GK Union were also in attendance watching them prepare ahead of the weekend.

The young goalkeepers got to see first-hand how Head of Goalkeeping Lee Kendall helped get the players ready for professional matches, before heading off with both Head of Academy Goalkeeping Ben Ascroft and Academy Goalkeeper Coach Matt Whitworth for a session of their own.

Ben and Matt started off the session with simple ball handling activities, and hen moved onto transition work between saves – which looked to be a favourite for all the young goalkeepers in attendance.

After the first-team finished their training, the keepers all met up for a chat and a laugh to get to know each other and show unity between all age groups, ranging from the first professional years all the way to the football league.

Lee spoke to the club after the day and had nothing but praise for everyone involved: “It was great to see all the Academy goalkeepers and their parents that were available to come along to the day.

"They arrived at the Poolfoot training complex and watched the first-team goalkeepers train and prepare for a professional league match and then had the chance to interact as one big group, which was fantastic.

“They had a chance to talk about all thing goalkeeping, and what it’s like to be a goalkeeper at Fleetwood at every level the club has. I think it was a worthwhile day for everyone involved as no matter how much experience you have or how old you are, they are all still learning, and they can learn from each other.”
