FLEETWOOD TOWN

The Cod Army are back on the road this weekend after their midweek trip to the Stadium of Light. It was a fantastic start to the game with Barrie McKay scoring in the 5th minute, but it was late heartbreak as Max Power scored with the last kick of the game to salvage the Black Cats a point.

Town currently sit 7th in the table, and are nine games unbeaten in Sky Bet League One – going back to the 2-2 home draw against Shrewsbury Town. With five wins out of their last six matches, there is plenty of positives for Joey Barton and his team ahead of the trip to Prenton Park.

TRANMERE ROVERS

Tranmere currently sit 21st in the league standings, and picked up vital points in midweek with their 3-2 away win over Shrewsbury Town. Nick Ellis and Alex Woodyard both scored within 15 minutes, but were pegged back with two quick-fire goals from the Salops.

Midfielder Corey Blackett-Taylor scored the all-important goal in added on time, meaning Rovers picked up their second win in 15 matches. It’s going to be another tough game for Tranmere this Saturday when Barton and his Cod Army come to town.

ONE TO WATCH – COREY BLACKETT-TAYLOR

One for Town fans to keep an eye out for on Saturday afternoon is, Corey Blackett-Taylor. The midfielder has played 32 times this season, scoring five goals in the process.

Blackett-Taylor scored in midweek with his dramatic last gasp winner at Shrewsbury Town, and will be looking to add to his goal tally when Fleetwood are the opponents to Prenton Park.

The 22-year-old began his career at Aston Villa, but struggled to get his foot in the door and this led to his first and only loan move out to Walsall in January 2019 for six-months.

Tranmere came calling in July 2019, and got their man on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. Blackett-Taylor was sent off in his fourth game for the club, and scored his first goal in their 1-0 win over promotion hopefuls, Coventry City.

PRE-MATCH WITH JOEY BARTON

“We have no pressure. We have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose because in our culture, we get strong and we get better.

“What our fans need to understand is that this is a special team. This is a special group of players and we know we won’t have certain players here with us next season. It’s unique and bespoke to what we are doing now and we need the fans now! Don’t wait five more games to support the boys, don’t wait until next season, this team might not be the best in the league next season.

“We are right in the mix, and as player and staff, this is what we do it for. This is why we come to work and why we have become professional footballers, we want to be part of these high stake games and have all to gain. It’s a great place to be here at Fleetwood Town.”

WHAT MICKY MELLON HAD TO SAY:

“It’s good that we got our reward for our good work, but now it is back to training and back to hard work, and that we hit these levels all of the time.

“We need to continue to keep working hard on the things that will give us a better chance of winning games, and that is clean sheets, getting first goals and showing the characteristics you need to win games at this level.

“I firmly believe if I keep trying to improve the players and keep working on the things that improve performance, then the results will come. We are starting to hit and go above those levels, we just have to do it consistently now, and I’m sure if we keep turning in those performances, the results will keep coming.”
