Head coach Joey Barton spoke to the club ahead of Tuesday’s Papa John’s Trophy cup tie against local rivals Blackpool at Highbury Stadium.

The Cod Army have had a perfect record so far this season in the Papa John’s Trophy, finishing the group stage with all nine points earned.

Here’s what the gaffer had to say:

On Tuesday’s tie…

“There’s no point dwelling on the last result too long because there is another derby game here on Tuesday night in the cup. We’ve got to dust ourselves down, get back on the training ground, and start to turn this result around.

“It’s not every-day you get a rematch a few days later, against your local rivals, but also for local pride, both teams were desperate to win the league fixture we knew how important it was before the game as for Blackpool.

“We’ve got to put it right on Tuesday night. We’ve got to be bang at it from the get-go and I think the challenge now is over to the players. They know what is expected here and know about the local bragging rights that the town of Fleetwood have when it beats a town like Blackpool.”

On Saturday’s loss…

“It allowed them to one-up us but for them to come to a play-off finishing side last season and winning, especially how good we have been at home it’s a big scalp for us but a big boost for their confidence.

“The season’s a long hard slog, it would have been nice for the fans to have won the league fixture but after that game, I said to the lads we have to be crystal clear about winning we have to play like we did in the second half and not the first-half and if we do that, we’re a match for anybody.

“In the league fixture, the players disappointed our supporters, but luckily for them, they have a chance to put something right, normally we have to wait four or five months, albeit the league game was the one both sides wanted to win.”
