Fleetwood Town will be holding an open service to commemorate Fleetwood players who lost their life and served their country during the First World War.
A short memorial ceremony – which will begin at 12:15pm on Friday 9th November at the club’s training ground, Poolfoot Farm – will also see a tree planted as part of the Woodland Trust, EFL and The FA’s For Club and Country project, to the provide a living legacy to those who served and fell during the war.
A commemorative wooden plinth will also be installed featuring former Fleetwood player Sheard Salthouse, who lost his life during the war, along with other players from the club who answered the country’s call. Salthouse was the only known player to represent the club who lost his life whilst fighting for his country
Fleetwood may claim to have one of the most patriotic football teams in the country, after ten players answered their country’s call, joining both the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Field Artillery.
As part of the service, the Last Post will be played along with a two-minute period of silence. Senior club officials will also be in attendance for the service which is open to the public.
