Fleetwood Town continued their preparations for the new season with a 4-0 victory over Salford City in a pre-season match on Friday Evening at The Peninsula Stadium.

Following a training match against Southport on Tuesday afternoon, Joey Barton took charge of his inaugural match as Head Coach of the club. Goals from Paddy Madden, Bobby Grant, Ashley Nadesan and Harrison Biggins saw Town ease to victory over the Vanarama National League side.

Donning the new Hummel away kit for the first time, Town started off the game well with the team keeping possession and creating plenty of chances early doors. Bobby Grant looked to open the scoring after cutting in from the right wing, however his powerful shot was saved by the Salford Keeper.

The home side threatened midway through the first half with Glynn and Dudley both seeing their shots at goal saved by Alex Cairns, who didn't have too much to do on the night.

Town took the lead in the 37th minute of the match through Madden. The Irishman managed to find space inside the 18-yard box after Rangers loanee Jason Holt delivered the corner, and it was just what Barton's side deserved.

At the half-time interval, Barton made five changes which saw Gethin Jones, Ash Eastham, Tommy Spurr, Lewis Baines and Biggins replacing Lewie Coyle, Craig Morgan, Cian Bolger, Eddie Clarke and Jack Sowerby.

With the changes, Salford started the second half well with substitute Tom Walker having two shots at the Town goal within the first two minutes, but his efforts weren't rewarded with a goal and soon after, Fleetwood gained the momentum.

Fleetwood took control of the game and ran away with it. McAleny scored the second of the match after Grant played the striker through with a defence splitting pass, and it was a lovely finish by the former Everton man who sent the ball past former Town keeper Chris Neal.

Ten minutes later, it was 3-0 as Hunter played through Nadesan, who finished the move off in style by hammering the ball into the back of the Salford goal.

Barton's final change of the evening saw FIFA Under 17 World Cup winning goalkeeper Billy Crellin take the place of Alex Cairns in the Fleetwood goal, meaning that none of the starting 11 were left on the pitch come the final whistle.

Fleetwood - wearing their new yellow Hummel kit - finished the game off with Nadesan intercepting the ball midway into the Salford half, and the young striker raced through on goal to square the ball for Biggins to score and take the game to 4-0.

Graham Alexander’s side put some pressure on the Town goal with a late flurry of corners, however they could not break through leaving the Cod Army to ensure a strong start to pre-season.

The squad will travel to Budapest on Sunday for a week-long training camp. During this time, they will play two more friendly matches.
