Fleetwood Town's Under 18s coach Simon Wiles has praised his side after an emphatic 7-1 win over Port Vale in the Youth Alliance League.

Jay Matete opened the scoring after just two minutes, before Carl Johnston doubled their lead with four minutes gone.

Shayden Morris, Kian Makepeace and Katlego Mashigo scored for Town as they went into the break with a 5-1 lead, and Makepeace scored two second half goals to claim his hat-trick as Town claimed a 7-1 win.

Read what Wiles had to say in his post-match interview below.

On a wonderful team performance...

"I'm really pleased with the way the lads have played today. We've been saying for a number of weeks now when creating opportunities, we need to be more ruthless in front of goal.

"Especially first half - scoring five - the lads have been taking the messages on board, creating some great patterns and some fantastic finishes.

"They're going to come out a different beast in the second half, which they did - they worked hard and made it difficult for us to play out game. They adapted, and we had to weather a bit of pressure but to then go on and get a couple more goals, it’s really pleasing.

"I'm delighted for Shayden that he has managed to get off the mark - he's scored today by receiving in midfield, driving at players and getting a shot off. The message for him this week was when you get your opportunity let fly - and he did."

On a perfect start to the match...

"It has been a little bug of mine for a couple of months that we've been playing some really good football but not getting the end product right, so to get the two goals in the first five minutes was fantastic for the lads.

"From that moment on you've still got another 40 minutes to try and build on that because you're always going to expect a reaction. Our players earned the right to play today."

On the performance of Kian Makepeace...

"Kian has played well today - we spoke about his performance on Tuesday at Rochdale he just needs to show the ball a bit better for us and not always come to feet looking to spin behind as well.

"I think it was his first goal where Jay Matete has picked up a great position and played a little reverse pass where Kian is looking on the back line - it's a great touch and a great finish.

"When we get him in front of goal, he can bury them - it's the rest of his gameplay that we need to help him get further up the pick with. He led the line really well today - it's always good to get three goals to your name in one game. I'm pleased for Kian, to get that in a game is fantastic."
