Forward Paddy Madden scored two goals in Fleetwood’s 3-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers on Boxing Day at Highbury to take his tally up to 12 for the season.

Madden scored in the first half and it was thoroughly deserved by the chances created by the home side. The Irishman made his trademark near post run and slotted his header past the keeper.

A second half goal from Ash Hunter and an injury time goal by Madden sealed the points and the double over promotion hopefuls Doncaster Rovers. Madden is now on 12 goals for the season in all competitions for the Cod Army.

Here is what Madden had to say after his two goals on Wednesday afternoon...

On his two goals against Doncaster…

“It is always nice to get a couple of goals and a clean sheet at home, but the most important thing was the three points. We had to put the Bristol Rovers game behind us and come out of the block and show that character.

“For my first goal it was a great ball by Shez [Nathan Sheron] and those early balls are the ones I like because there’s always that little bit of space in behind the defender and with the ball into the box, I managed to catch it nicely and I have seen the ball go in.

“With the second, Marns [Marney] did well to slide me in and thankfully I have caught it well and the ball has gone into the back of the net. For us now there’s a lot of confidence to take forward into the next game.”

On the side and what they can achieve…

“We have everything in our side, but I think we just need to be more consistent because if we do, we will climb that table and we have shown that we can play against the bigger teams in the division.

“There’s no reason why we can’t go on a run and show that consistent. At half-time we came in ahead and Donny were probably the better team in the first half, and after a few words, it got us going in the second half. We got into shape and as I said earlier, showed great character to go on and get the three nil win.

“If I am not mistaken we have four clean sheets in a row now at home and that brings confidence in this side. If you keep your shape in this league and don’t over do things, you can win a lot of games. We did that superbly in the second half and we grinded it out which was important.”
