Town travel to the capital city on Saturday to face Charlton Athletic in the Sky Bet League One fixture. Here is your preview ahead of the match.

Fleetwood came away 5-0 winners on Wednesday night away at Scunthorpe and will be looking to extend their unbeaten on the road against Lee Bowyers Addicks in the Capital city.

Town sit sixth in the league table on seven points and will look to narrowly the gap between themselves, Sunderland and league leaders Peterborough come 5pm on Saturday..

Head coach Joey Barton spoke after the club’s record victory in the Football League on Wednesday and believes his players need to continue to play with confidence against a well organised Charlton side.

Joey Barton said…

“Charlton are a top side in this division and will be looking for promotion this season.

"The last time I came to The Valley was with Burnley and we won 4-0 to win the title, and for some reason the trophy was in Middlesborough. We know it is going to be a tough match and if I know Lee Bowyer, he will have his side right up for this game and my players need to be prepared.

"We do go there with confidence after our performance in midweek, and I know we need to go out and give a good account of ourselves."

The Form Guide…

Having played four games in the league, Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town currently sit inside the play-off places with two wins and a draw from their opening set of matches.

With away wins over Oxford United and Scunthorpe United, and a draw against Rochdale at home – which saw The Dale score a 90+5th minute equaliser at Highbury, the Cod Army are starting to see find their feet under the new management day.

Charlton opened their season against Sunderland, with the game finishing 2-1 to the Black Cats thanks to goals from Josh Maja, and a 90th minute strike from Lynden Gooch. Former AFC Wimbledon striker Lyle Taylor gave Charlton the lead 10 minutes into the game

Bowyer’s side came away with three points in the first home game against Shrewsbury Town in a 2-1, only four days before their 3-0 defeat away at MK Dons in the Carabao Cup first round.

The Addicks picked up a point away at Accrington Stanley last week and lost 1-0 to league leaders Peterborough United on Tuesday night.

2018/19 Sky Bet League Form:

Fleetwood Town: L W D W (7 points)

Charlton Athletic: L W D L (4 points)

We’ve Met Before

The two side have only met four times in the Football League, with the first meeting taking place in September 2016. The match finished 2-2 with Chris Long (now back at Town for a second spell) and David Ball getting on the scoresheet.

Charlton won the first match last season against Fleetwood 3-1 and it was former Town loanee Tarique Fosu-Henry who bagged the perfect hat-trick, with Bobby Grant getting a consolations goal for Uwe Rosler’s men.

The match at The Valley in March of this year finished goalless.

One to Watch

Charlton Athletic’s one to watch is striker Lyle Taylor. The 28-year old started off his career at Millwall back in 2007 and was loaned out to Eastbourne a year later to gain experience at the non-league club.

Having made an impact, Bournemouth knocked on the youngster’s door and moved to the Cherries on a two-year deal.

The forward has scored 88 league career goals in 217 appearances, and most recently was at AFC Wimbledon where he played at Kings Meadow for three years, scoring 44 goals in 131 league games.

Taylor’s contract was up in the summer and he made the move across London to the Valley, and has scored two goals in four games.
