Town forward Conor McAleny sat down in front of the media on Thursday morning at Poolfoot Farm and gave his thoughts on the match against his former club.

The 25-year-old celebrates will celebrate his birthday on Sunday and with a win and a goal at The Kassam Stadium, it really would be the perfect early present.

Here are the key quotes from McAleny’s pre match press conference:

On the talent and competition for places in the current team…

“I believe there is more of that this season and as I have said before, it is healthy competition and it’s needed within a squad.

“Everyone is different and we all know what we need to do this season to help the team. We need everyone to chip in and take us forward.

“Most players will agree with that, so that’s what we need and it will only bring a positive vibe in and around us.”

On his goal against Oxford last season at the Kassam Stadium…

“It was one of those shots that when it left my boot, you know it is going in!”

“It is always nice to score a goal like that, but the most important thing for us was that we came away with the three points and that is all that matters.

“We win as a team and we lose as a team and it is always good to get the win and the goal, but that is all it was, three very important points.

“We are hoping to go there again this time and get the same result.”

Will the forward be celebrating if he scores this weekend…?

“I will definitely be celebrating this time if I score a goal, yeah!”

Thoughts on the opening game against The Wombles…

“It wasn’t the start we wanted, but we need to remember that it is only the first game of the season.

“There is still a lot to build on and play for and nothing gets decides after one match, we can’t worry too much about it. We had chances with Tommy Spurr’s two chances being blocked, and on another day they go on.

“With Bobby Grant’s effort, I was off my seat on the bench when it hit the post as I was just waiting for it to hit the back of the net, but that is football.

“We know what we need to do, and we are all excited for the game against Oxford this Saturday.”
