Head coach offers his thoughts following recent win over Morecambe

Under 18’s head coach Nathan Rooney says he was pleased by the character his young side displayed during their 3-2 win away at Morecambe on Saturday.

After taking the lead through Gerard Garner, Town fell behind early in the second half, but fought back to take all three points after a brace from winger Dan Mooney.

“We dominated the first half and deserved our lead,” said Rooney.

“But with youth team football in general things tend to change in each half, they came out all guns blazing in the second period and made it difficult for us.

“Every game this season we’ve been open to scoring goals so I didn’t feel concerned that we were going to lose the game, it’s just us all over that we’ve found a winner in the last five minutes. We seem to be doing that every single game.

“To always have the ability to come back is pleasing and shows we’ve got a good group of players and a good culture, that's the main thing to take from today.”

Mooney capped a fine display by curling in the winner late on, but Rooney was keen to praise the whole side, rather than one player.

“He’s performing well week in week out, to be fair to him he hasn’t really had any downs on the pitch this season.

“When it comes to a Saturday he’s always producing the performances for us.

“But as we said to the lads it’s not just down to Dan it's down to all 11 men on the field, his game wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t stick to our patterns and structure throughout the game which has helped bring out the best in Dan.”
