New signing Ben Davies reacts to Town’s first win of 2017

Ben Davies said that a win and clean sheet on his debut was ‘brilliant’ as Fleetwood beat Shrewsbury 1-0 on Monday.

A solitary Devante Cole goal in the first-half was enough for the Uwe Rosler’s side to see off their Shropshire opponents.

“We had to stick in there in the end to see the game out,” Davies said.

“To keep the clean sheet was good, but 1-0 away from home on my debut is brilliant.

“We settled quite well. They didn’t show much and to get the early goal in any game is crucial and we just looked to build on that.

“The game showed what character we have in the squad, the lads at the back defended for their lives. Both the front and back did well, we knew we would need everyone if we were to get the clean sheet – but it was a relief to hear the final whistle.”

The young defender also praised the role of veteran Nathan Pond, and believes he can learn a lot from the Town legend.

“He talks throughout the game, he’s solid, he wins headers and helps you with positioning,” added Davies.

“He doesn’t need to tell me everything I need to do, but if he sees anything I need to improve on or to change my position slightly he is more than happy to help me.”

The result at New Meadow ensured Town move into a play-off position, after some fine form that now stretches the clubs unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions.
