Lewie Coyle says Saturday’s opening Sky Bet League One fixture with Rotherham United is a chance to show Fleetwood Town’s intentions for the upcoming season.

The defender – who is on loan at Town for the season from Championship side Leeds United – is all set to make his competitive debut for Uwe Rosler’s side at Highbury on Saturday.

Having featured in pre-season at right wing-back, and even scoring at both ends of the pitch, Coyle is looking forward to the big kick-off.

“The lads are raring to go, and we are all looking forward to it,” said Coyle.

“It is a massive test for us on the opening day and I’m sure both teams will be looking to make a statement. We just need to sure it is us who come out on top at the end of the ninety minutes.

“Obviously the club missed out last year, but we can’t dwell on that. I think it’s important that we show our intentions from the game on Saturday and look to get off to a winning start, and show everyone what our intentions are this season.”

With the big kick-off just around the corner, Town are not amongst the favourites for success, something that Coyle thinks can work to the team’s advantage.

“I think that can almost be a positive going under the radar sometimes,” added the 21 year-old.

“Your bigger teams in the league get built up and such high expectations which I think can be the undoing of certain teams. Hopefully we will be where we want to be come the end of the season.”
