Head coach reacts after Lions victory

Head coach Uwe Rosler says it is a ‘big relief’ after Fleetwood Town secured a Sky Bet League One playoff position after Monday’s 1-0 win over Millwall.

Ben Davies’ header deep into first half injury time, as well as a heroic performance by goalkeeper Alex Cairns was enough for Town to seal three points at Highbury.

Speaking after the match, Rosler says his team has to ride a storm in the first 30 minutes of the match before coming through to win.

“The game was a massive ask for us,” said Rosler.

“I think we started really nervously and Millwall were very well organised, they have giants in their team.

“It is a big relief in the camp that we are finally mathematically in the play offs.

“We rode our luck a little in the first 30 minutes, after that we grew in confidence that we can deal with that sort of football, especially Ben Davies.

“The team grew in confidence doing that, we played decent against a very good Millwall side and obviously the last 10 minutes was backs against the wall.”

Rosler was also keen to praise goalkeeper Cairns, who pulled off a string of wonderful saves to keep the Lions at bay.

“I think you need match winners in both boxes and Alex was that for us today in our own box,” added Rosler.

“I think that Pondy grew into the game, he struggled a little bit in the first half, but how he grew into it and how many headers he won in the second half, he was phenomenal.

“With Alex, crucial saves and he is also in goalkeeping terms of age, still a baby.

“He’s still very young and this is his first real experience in men’s football, he’s got the best out of it and he is growing in confidence each week.”

“I think also for Ben Davies, this game could be the breakthrough for his career because he has grown in confidence.

“There is so much more potential in the player, in areas that we can improve him with the ball and without the ball.

“He’s an absolute pleasure for me, to watch players like him and we have a few of them but we don’t rely on one player as it was a massive team effort from us this week.”
