Town's youth team beat Morecambe over the weekend

Fleetwood Town youth team manager Nathan Rooney was full of praise for his side after they got back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Morecambe on Saturday morning.

Having previously gone three-games without recording maximum points, a brace either side of the interval from Mamadou Djabi proved decisive, in what was ultimately a well-deserved win for the Codlings at Lytham Cricket Club.

In an interview with the Club website, Rooney was impressed with the way his youngsters handled themselves, on a crisp morning on the west Lancashire coast.

Rooney said: “It has been the best performance we’ve had since the Christmas break, with regards to how the game went, the passing game kind of came out there.

“I thought Morecambe worked very hard in certain areas of the pitch, but overall, we got more goal scoring opportunities and it was a very enjoyable performance.

“The main positive was probably having 80% possession, and the 15 chances on goal, even though some of the chances weren’t clear cut. Mamadou has obviously lifted himself and got himself two more goals.

“It was a collective performance though because if you look at the back-line after the first 15 minutes, we weren’t touched, we weren’t hassled, we were solid.

“Elliot Wynne has obviously had to keep his concentration when we played out from the back, but we didn’t have many occasions to do that.

“The pleasing thing is, we weren’t hurt. We have dominated a full 80 minutes of football, so that is pleasing – we were only really hurt for the first initial ten minutes.”
