Manager's thoughts following final pre-season game

Manager Graham Alexander described his team’s performance against Getafe as ‘excellent’ as the Cod Army sealed a 2-0 win over the La Liga side on Friday evening.

Two Antoni Sarcevic penalties were the difference between the sides, as the skipper for the evening struck either side of half time.

Fleetwood controlled the game from start to finish and the boss was pleased with a solid work out in the Club’s final pre-season friendly before the League One season begins against Southend United a week on Saturday.

He said: “It was an excellent performance. We wanted to build the lads up towards the start of the season and build upon each performance.

“I think that we did that tonight. We played some incisive, attacking football. We deservedly scored both goals and we played some very good stuff, especially in the first half.

“The players are getting to grips with what we want from them and are learning how their new team mates play and how they complement each other.

“It was good to have Eggert back and fit. Jamille Matt started for the first time at Highbury Stadium for nearly a year.

“There were loads of positives tonight as there has been in other games. We are happy that we have got to this stage of pre-season and we have got the majority of the squad fit and ready to go against Southend.

“That is what we have been all building up for. We are really pleased with the work the players have put in over pre-season.

“We have a week to go now until the season kicks off and we are all looking forward to it.

“It is not about results in pre-season. I am not going to change my mind because we have won 2-0 tonight. We are all competitors so we want to win football matches but winning pre-season games doesn’t gain us any points.

“We are ready to go next week. We are delighted with the work ethic of the players throughout pre-season. They are starting to gel as a group and there were some excellent performances tonight.”
