Borussia Dortmund B are the reserve side of Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, with Fleetwood Town playing them in a pre-season friendly on the 15th July.

Dortmund B play in the fourth tier of German football, Regionalliga West, following their relegation from 3. Liga last season where they finished in 18th place, occupying the third relegation place.

Their relegation back to the Regionalliga West ends a three-year stay in the third tier of German football after winning the 2011-12 Regionalliga West title.

Their 2012 triumph was their second success in the fourth tier having won the title in 2009, though following their promotion to 3. Liga they lasted just one season and were relegated in 2010.

Other previous honours have seen them win the now-defunct Oberliga Westfalen three times in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

Dortmund B play their home matches at the Stadion Rote Erde which has a capacity of just fewer than 10,000 for football matches. It is also used for athletics meeting for which it can hold up to 25,000 spectators.

The fixture against Town on Wednesday however will be played at the home of FC TuRa Bergkamen.

The stadium was the former home of the first team squad, hosting them from 1937 until 1974 before they moved into the new Westfalenstadion.

During the Second World War the stadium was damaged and required renovating and in 1962 had temporary wooden stands erected to extend the capacity to 42,000.

The Stadion Rote Erde also has international pedigree having played host to the German national side on two occasions.

The first was in May 1935 where Germany beat Ireland 3-1, while the second came in April 1967 as West Germany beat Albania 6-0 in a 1968 European Championships Qualifier.

Dortmund B are coached by former USA international and Bundesliga veteran David Wagner who has been in charge since July 2011, winning the Regionalliga title in his first season.

In his own playing career he featured for the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt, FSV Mainz and Schalke as well as making eight appearances for USA.

As for the playing staff, Dortmund B have seen a number of high profile names come through their ranks.

The likes of former Liverpool loanee Nuri Sahin appeared for them before helping the first team win the 2011 Bundesliga title and move to Real Madrid.

Marcel Schmelzer has also featured as has Erik Durm who made up part of Germany’s successful 2014 World Cup squad.
