Billy Paynter netted just before the hour mark

Antoni Sarcevic cut a frustrated figure following Town’s narrow defeat to Hartlepool United in the first round of the Capital One Cup this evening.

The Cod Army exited the competition as Billy Paynter’s header just before the hour was all that separated the two sides.

Graham Alexander’s side had chances to get themselves back into the tie, but the Pools defence frustrated the Fylde Coast outfit.

After the game, Sarcevic said: “The lads wanted a little cup run this year and we’ve let ourselves down as well as everyone else at the Club.

“Tonight wasn’t good enough but it’s just that cutting edge we’re missing at the minute.

“At the end of the day the gaffer knows his football, so if you’re good enough then he’ll play you no matter of age.

“Age isn’t really a matter, it’s just killing games and seeing them off. We’re not doing that right now.

“Hartlepool have played for that free kick and it was poor defending from us for the goal. A lapse of concentration has cost us.

“It will come though but it’s just frustrating as we should be winning games like tonight’s.

“We need to put this result behind us and just focus on Saturday now. We’ll hopefully put it right.”
