The Cod Army defeated Nike Academy convincingly

Barry Nicholson’s development squad picked up their fourth victory in succession as they beat Nike Academy 4-1 at St George’s Park this afternoon.

Goals from Josh Green and Nick Haughton in the first half were added to by a couple of strikes from two trialists in the second, as the Cod Army continued their impressive streak.

Green’s early opener was cancelled out by a fine reply, but Haughton put Town back ahead with a composed finish, before proceedings were rounded off after the interval.

Nicholson’s side have beaten Bolton Wanderers, Morecambe and Tranmere Rovers in recent weeks, with a number of players catching the eye.

After the game, Nicholson said: “It was a good performance from the lads and with probably a little bit more care in the final third, we maybe should have scored a few more.

“Nick and Tyler Forbes were the two who played today who have had some experience with the first team, and apart from them it was all development and youth team players.

“Over the past few games we’ve had a little bit of help from the first teamers, but today was a really good performance.

“We’ve got some tough games coming up in the next few weeks which are really going to test us, so to get such a good victory today will help them.”

Next up for the Town squad will be clashes against Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End as they look to keep the unbeaten run going.
