Evans relishing Crewe reunion

8 August 2014

Attacker set to face former employers this weekend

Fleetwood Town winger Gareth Evans is looking forward to the Sky Bet League One season starting against Crewe Alexandra tomorrow.

Evans will be no stranger to the visitors to Highbury, having come through their renowned Youth system and was looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.

“It will be great,” he said.

“The likes of myself, Mark Roberts, Antoni  Sarcevic and a few others have all played there so we’ll want to get one over them, a few of the lads will have a point to prove.

“I spent a lot of time at Crewe, I still know a lot of people there but the most important thing is the three points.”

The last times both sides met was in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy back in October and the Cod Army ran out impressive 4-0 winner on that occasion, but Evans said that result would have no bearing on how Saturday’s match will go.

“It will be different this time,” he said.

“Last time we played them in the cup and I’m not sure if either side played their strongest team so we can’t read too much into that.”

The winger also felt that despite being new to the league, The Cod Army are prepared for what League One has to offer.

“We went up last season but in my eyes we underachieved a little because the squad is so good and we have so much strength in depth,” he said.

“We learnt from our mistakes last season so hopefully we’ll really kick on now.”

Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Partick Thistle rounded off Town’s pre-season campaign, and despite being left frustrated by missed opportunities against the SPL outfit, Evans was hoping to carry his form into the new season.

“I didn’t play a hell of a lot at the back end of last season but I’ve played as much as anyone in pre-season so hopefully that will continue into the new season,” he added.
