Fleetwood Town's Matty Blair is in high spirits ahead of the new season.

Blair, 24, has stated he is in great physical condition ready for Town's league opener against Dagenham and Redbridge. “Fitness-wise I feel good and I just can't wait to start the season now. We have also got to play Southport which will be another good game for everybody that is involved.”

The winger played a large majority of Town's 2-0 victory over Coventry City on Wednesday, a hard fought win against an impressive looking outfit. Blair said: “I thought Coventry City were very good to be fair to them. They played the ball around nicely but we were able to cope with them comfortably. We held our shape well, we were very disciplined within the shape and then we scored the two goals towards the end of the game. So it was a very good result for us.”

Describing himself as a 'Cov Boy', Blair said he was happy to play against the Sky Blues but declared he wasn't particularly pleased with his individual performance. “I really wanted to play against them and it was a good run out for me and the lads. I could probably have done a bit more on the pitch, I wasn't too pleased with how I played but that is what pre-season friendlies are for.”

The former York City man has also heaped praise on the outstanding pitch and atmosphere at Highbury. “The playing surface is one of the best in the league and it always has been. We are confident that the pitch will remain in the same condition throughout the season and even in the tough winter period when pitches tend to cut up.” Blair continued: “If we are doing well in the league that should generate more supporters and more fans equals more noise. A better atmosphere will result in a better performance from the lads.”

Admission for the friendly against Southport at Haig Avenue is £8 adults and £5 others. Kick-off is 3pm. Former Town left-back Alan Wright is the new manager of the Conference club.
