Fleetwood Town play a ‘behind closed doors’ match against Conference side Gateshead at Highbury this afternoon, starting at 2pm.

The Cod Army’s first chance to see the team in action will be on Saturday with a friendly against a Blackburn Rovers XI, at Accrington Stanley’s ground, kick off noon. Manager, Micky Mellon, has added another fixture to his side’s pre-season programme, also a ‘behind closed doors’ match, at SPL side Kilmarnock on Wednesday, August 1st. This will form part of the team’s few days training in Scotland. Midfielder Keith Briggs, who has left the club by mutual consent, made ten starts and a further ten from the bench in his season at Highbury. The former Kidderminster captain scored once, against Hayes and Yeading, but his campaign was beset by injuries. The popular squad member will be remembered as one of just two players, the other being Gareth Seddon, who succeeded in Soccer AM’s ‘Crossbar Challenge’ when the Sky TV cameras visited training towards the end of the season! Fleetwood will not be operating a reserve side next season in the Central League this season as Micky Mellon prefers to set up ‘development matches’ with other clubs as and when necessary. Two Lancashire FA Cup draws have set up away ties for Town teams. The Senior Cup Competition has drawn Fleetwood with Bury while the Youth Cup draw sends Town’s rising stars to Wigan Athletic in the First Round. The winners of the Youth game will travel to Merseyside to meet either Liverpool or Tranmere. Last Saturday, the Youth Team travelled across the border to Welsh team Conwy United and lost 3-1 in a friendly fixture. Town’s scorer was Abdul Rajab. Town’s Youth Team will compete in the Football League’s Puma Alliance North West Conference ‘A’, including Blackpool, Preston and Morecambe. They will play games on Saturday mornings at 11:00 a.m. with home matches at the YMCA Sports Facility, Mythop Road, Lytham. Spectators will be welcome.
